He sounds like he's 'jutifying' the reason for the pup being there !

only one reason I can think of - predator in the area

there are things down there bigger than us .... and while cute to look back on, bet it gave his heart more of a workout than the diving

I enjoyed the video and especially since the sea lion was involved, however:

It is one thing to be night diving - been there done that - but totally another to be doing it alone. It violates all the safety rules of SCUBA diving.

I'm a former Assistant Instructor for PADI and still have a valid Dive Master status although I do not dive anymore. DW is an Advanced diver and as such a prerequisite was to perform two night dives. You can ask her about it, but the gist is that when the barracuda looked her in the face mask it was the last time she did any night diving.

I still enjoyed the video as "cute" but with reservations on the safety aspect.

Wayne, I don't want to stir a hornets nest, but just to state my position on solo diving. I am a retired Master Instructor, 2,500 lifetime dives and over 300 students certified. I am also a certified Solo Diver through TDI/SDI. Solo diving is a discipline requiring appropriate training, experience, equipment and conditions. I have the training, equipment and experience, and when the conditions are right I dive solo, including night diving. The Buddy System which has been taught for years as the inviolable rule of diving is a flawed concept at best. In my 23 years of diving I have had only 3 "serious" incidents. Each one was caused directly by the actions of a dive buddy who had been randomly assigned to me on a dive boat. In contrast, I have dive buddies to whom i would unhesitatingly trust my life. So, blind adherence to the Buddy Rule can be a bad thing depending on a whole lot of circumstances. The diver in the seal pup video was diving in flat calm water, close to shore judging by the lights in the background. Solo night diving in the right conditions is one of the most peaceful experiences imaginable. Just my 2c worth, I choose to dive solo but do not advocate it or encourage others to do so.
