I don't trust it. There is going to be a lot of work and testing before the technology is reliable and safe enough for use.

I give it 20 years before it is ready for prime time.

Hope you don't fly commercial airlines. The pilots rarely are actively flying the planes these days. The modern planes are fully capable of automatic take off, following the flight route and landing. I think they rely on the pilots to step on the brakes just to make sure they stay awake.

This is going to happen sooner than you think. Tesla has revealed plans for a plug-in hybrid motor home.

Inside the home, Tesla included all the amenities you’d expect: flat-screen TVs, a space-efficient kitchen, a bathroom with composting toilet and water-saving shower, and a built-in video monitoring system so you can keep an eye on your Model S while it’s parked outside. That last feature is important, of course, since the Model H won’t come with a garage.

I see all those who don't trust it. And I'm still waiting as well. But anyone who has ever struggled with a parent who should not be driving and still is will likely tell you that they can't wait for this technology to mature. I don't want to be the person who kills someone because they refused to quit driving or use technology that will help prevent it. So I'm going to wait and cross my fingers that when I need to stop it will be ready.

Maybe I'm the Luddite in the group, but I've seen this high tech/pie in the sky/ geez whiz stuff come and go. It all sounds great until you actually have to build and implement it and then it all falls apart.
I'm still waiting for the flying cars we were all supposed to have by now.

Transport aircraft have been capable of full autoflight for years. There's no significant technical reason the technology couldn't be applied to land vehicles. The weak link in the plan is human. How do you think the driving public will fare if they are required to be trained to the same technical depth and performance level as airline pilots? With a min passing grade of 80 or 90%?

Can you imagine the carnage if they ever allowed flying cars?

That said, I've seen the tech that powers our cell phones and tablets develop over the last 30 years or so. When Apple released the Newton it seemed to be a ground breaking idea, but the tech wasn't there to make it really workable. Now we have the affordable computing power that allows everyone to carry computers in their pockets.

I personally think widely deployed self driving cars are no more than 5 to 10 years out and will probably revolutionize personal transportation in ways we just can't imagine.

I'd guess more than 10 because they will need some kind of infrastructure for control. We already have autonomous navigation races. The push will be for the older folks and the high traffic roads. Think load the destination like a GPS, manual control to the on ramp and the system picks up the data and slots the vehicle into the traffic pattern that flows smoothly to the exit ramp. If they are smart they will exit and park the vehicle if the driver does not actively prevent it. That gives the folks taking a nap time to wake up. ;-)

Self driving vehicles ? Lawyers are going to love it ! All they can see is the dollars . WHO will be held responsible for the accidents . Driver ? What driver the human , software ? Or should I say who has the deepest pockets . This is going to be very interesting . I can only imagine what the insurance premiums will be . Like I said this is going to be very interesting !

It'll be great for pub crawls. No more designated drivers. When all cars are driverless or no driver allowed, who will want a Porsche? If you can't steer it, can't shift it, why bother.
