Shower function.

How does one prevent the blast of cold water when the shower is shut off to conserve water? About the time I think I have it mastered, it gets me again. It seems there should be a cure for this because it is not strictly an RV thing. I have it at home too. Any suggestions?

Our shower-head has a shutoff valve that stops the water flow. When you turn it on, the water is the same temp it was before, minus a little heat loss during the interval. That feature was the first thing I pointed out to my wife, she takes LONG showers at home and the grey tank or water heater wouldn't handle it in the RV.

geezerb.....The solution is simple, even when conserving water, let it drip a little. I think, not sure, but I believe newer RV's and shower products are required to allow a drip when the shower head is turned off at a stop/valve vs being turned off completely at the shower hot and cold valve. The dripping prevents the water from becoming hot and scalding you.

One of the best shower heads on the market is the Oxygenics shower head. It makes you feel like you have twice the pressure, yet is one of the lowest water users available. The shower head injects air as the water flows. It may be gross, but it's like the water is being spit out. The reason I mention this is that the Oxygenics unit comes with a shut off valve on the hose that allows a drip to occur.

Some of the water saver valves do shut the water off completely and yes if the water is off for any length of time the water will cool.

It can be replaced easily with what the hardware store calls a trickle valve. It has a push button for on and almost off. Water still dribbles when in the off position. Around $8.00 at most hardware stores, my wife likes it.

I turn the shower head to the wall until it warms up.

Put an inline ball check valve that you can buy at Home depot. Install it in the hot water line and the cold water cannot back up into that line.

As for the Oxygenics shower head I have read about those for years and never wanted to spend the $50 for snake oil.
Boy do I love that snake oil. Finally sprung for one when the wife complained our existing shower head had poor pressure.

As for home showers the current mixers mounted inside the walls in Calif are designed to prevent scalds etc. You can change yours out but it can be a task.

That was my thinking as well - then at this year's Fleetwood Motorhome Association Rally we won a gift certificate from one of the vendors as a door prize - we ended up getting an Oxygenics shower head for the grand total of $12 - and it's worth it!
