Nasa is reporting as I write this that there was damage to the shuttle during take-off. Not sure of the details yet but the program is grounded. Not sure how these guys will deal with the problem to return.
Saying a prayer for safe return

My understanding is that the fuel tank was damaged, not the shuttle.

Ken you are right. Read that this AM and heard it on TV as well. They are grounding the whole thing however. Thank goodness the craft is not damaged.
It takes some brave souls to get into that thing. No way, exciting as it might be, would I ever think about it.

NASA already had "two and a half years" to redesign the ET and it's still shedding insulation.
Thank God that the shuttle is OK! I do believe that the program should be grounded until such time as they can test an ET on an unmanned flight and re-certify the insulation as suitable for space flight.
We can not afford to loose any more shuttles, it would be the end of the program.
PS: Let the contractor for the ETs pay for the recertification process as well, not NASA.
