Slide out topper awning material replacement

Recently, I had to cut away the slide topper awning material on the two slide topper awnings that was damaged by a storm. The main patio awning I had retracted before leaving for our excursion but the slides always stay extended no mater what comes up weather wise so the topper awnings get punished. Granted the topper awning material is old since our motor home is a 2006 model and the elements finally rotted the original fabric to the point where under tension from the roller(s), the fabric ripped. The toppers are Carefree brand and I called several places trying to find replacement material but everyone wanted to sell me new complete toppers. After a google search I found an online company that provides custom sized awning and topper fabric in various textures and colors. I measured my existing rollers and the slide out distance and the company made the fabric inserts out of a high quality vinyl coated fabric and sent it to me in about a two week period of time. Here are my questions even though I think I understand the process for installation: When I had to cut the old fabric from the roller, the roller spun and released the tension on the roller spring. I assume then just prior to installing the new fabric I will need to rotate the roller drum by hand in whichever direction to the point where it winds up tight so that when the fabric is installed and the slide is retracted the roller spring will let the drum rotate to roll the fabric onto the drum? When I roll up the drum to get the spring in tension, I am thinking I can insert a flat blade screw driver in the fabric retainer groove in the roller so that the screw driver handle can rest against the slide roof to keep the drum from spinning? With the drum thus secured from spinning I can slide the fabric into the drum groove and at the same time the groove mounted alongside the roof of the RV? Once I pull the screwdriver out of the groove, I assume any slack in the fabric will be taken up? If I can keep the drum from rotating when the spring is under tension, can this replacement exercise be done by one person?
I thank you in advance for any helpful hints you have to offer.

I would not use a screw drive to stop roller from turning. Carefree has hole/s in roller to lock it in place to main support shaft.
Here is a link to PDF on replacing a Carefree Slide Topper.
Depending on how long the slide topper is. It can be done with 1 person. Sliding the topper into groove on RV usually requires one person pulling and another person guiding and holding topper level and straight.

If you ever do it again, before cutting off the material, extend the slide about a foot, and 'pin' the awning tube. You will find instructions on Carefree's website, on how to do this for your topper model.

Check the videos out at this site >>> http://toughtopawnings.com/how-to-re...ng-fabric.html

I replaced my slide awnings last year. It can be done by one person and a step ladder but it goes much easier with two people and some scaffolding running the length of the slide.

If you bought from Tough Top, call them up. Tough Top was very willing to answer all of my questions.

As you will see in the video, the new material is installed with the slide extended and the roller drum under tension. You need to pin the ends of the roller because you can't hold the roller and install the fabric at the same time.
