I change the battery when the unit begins to chirp. It is the internal low battery detection system. Depending upon how many times I push the test button, and quality of batteries I purchase, it ranges from less than a year to 18 months.
What is the average number of time annually you test your smoke alarm? I've found faulty units that were only 2 years old.

We sometimes use ours as a cooking TIMER as well...when it goes off...it's DONE!

DW wasn't used to cooking on gas. She was making her tea (fresh ginger and chunks of cinnamon) and she heard the micro-wave timer go off but got sidetracked...two hours later, the overhead timer went off. Ever see the LID of a pot get burned? Never knew ginger could GLOW! Bob
