Social Security number fraud alert

Did you know that if your SSN gets compromised in any way you can call the SS office and have them put a fraud alert on the number? Reporting at the police station about Thom's wallet being taken the police officer made sure that we knew we could call them first thing Monday morning and have it done and from what he said that it was free to do .... just passing on information that I hope no one else has to use.

Good point. Thanks.
Not carrying an SS card in your wallet is good advice.

Your medi scare card has the same number. Eek.
You should post a fraud alert with
at least one of the credit reporting agencies like Equifax 8006851111.

Well, I have found out that AAA has Fraud Alert on their accounts. If you registrar with them you get free Fraud Alert protection. They will help you close accounts and contact who you need to contact to get new cards. They will also monitor your credit report for free, at least Experian is free. If you want them to monitor the others then yes you have to pay extra.

Apparently you can also renew a MI drivers license online today even if it expires today ....

Also you can order a certified copy of your birth certificate online too. Most states use https://www.vitalchek.com/?gclid=CPO...28991234&ppc=1 No that was not in the wallet taken but he needed one anyway for some other things.

Good luck with that if you are on Medicare. You may have a hard time getting in any emergency care place without it. Or see any doctors without the card with your SS number on it.

What is the rest of the story? Was the OP wallet stolen or misplaced, left unattended?

I have a Medicare Advantage plan thru an ins company. I use their card.

The supplemental plans require both cards. Therefore those who have that plan would have to carry the Medicare card which has your SS #.

Advantage plans are not the same as supplemental plans. I too have medicare advantage plan, and Social Security card is not necessary for care, only the card issued by the advantage plan. YMMV

Yup. That's what's been discussed.
