It definitely makes you think! My big regret is not retiring at 65 instead of waiting until 72!

I retired in Jan 1998 and still haven't gotten to go full timing. Getting closer though.

Work is what allowed me to provide for my future..........unless one inherits wealth or hits the lottery I don't know of a alternative.

Fortunately I learned from my MOM.....pay yourself every month just like a reoccurring bill.
At the age of 50 I was able to retire....that was 15 yrs ago.

SO far ......so good!

I retired at 52, 18 years ago. I agree, if you don't work how do you provide for your self, family and future? We can't all live on the dole.

Too much doom and gloom for my liking.

It makes it sound like we're all slaves and that we shouldn't work so we can live our lives. Seems too idealistic for me but I appreciate that it was shared.

A lot of what he says is true but did I miss where he explained the alternative?

I had a should be dead heart attack in 2012 While I was in intensive care my wife had to leave me to go to work because we were going to have to pay those huge medical bills.

Several stents later I had a stroke at 51.

My neurologist told us if there were things we wanted to do and could afford it we shouldn't wait. It was then we decided to get the RV we always talked about getting when we retired.

We're fortunate to be able to do things now instead of later because the reality is my wife will probablly be living her retirement without me.

We've cut way back on our business and the work we take on and are spending some of that money we have for retirement walking the line of enjoying now but still leaving enough to survive retirement.

But the question remains, what was that guys solution to everything he talked about especially for people not as fortunate as many of us?

A little unrealistic but if one plans one can escape the treadmill while young and healthy. I grew up in a very poor household and from the first job I ever had (stock boy at a local store at the age of 12) I promised myself that I would not work myself to death like my single mom did. So starting at age 12 I started saving 10% of my take home pay regardless of my situation, and there were some very lean times.

This meant that I was able to comfortably retire at the age of 55 and enjoy life. Still going strong 13 years later. Your mind set has a lot to do with it. AND never get married to your job. You job is you job not the definition of your life.

Your job is your job not the definition of your life.

Thanks for sharing that thought. It meant a lot to me.

THIS!
When younger and working you plan your future best one can.

You put away the money for getting the life one desires, the freedom one desires out of a job, ONLY way that happens is if when younger you take that 'very hard earned money' from the 'rat race' and BANK it.

live a bit below your means. then you can have so much more when heading into retirement at an earlier age.

we can't 'all live our passions' in life, won't happen but makes a very pretty picture but it is not reality.

Hubby just semi retired at 52, I am 56 and not working. We are now gonna have the freedom and fun to do what we personally want and it was all planned for this. Can all plan? Yes, but will it all work out for everyone the same, nope!

but hey, we have a life to plan, best take the smartest course to get what you want later, cause if it all works out well, you won the biggest lottery of all, freedom from the rat race. we took the gamble and feel we have won a ton! we were blessed for sure with a good bit of planning on our part !!

Too Idealistic

The speaker did not offer an alternative to making a living. The reality of the 21st century is that you must work harder than the next person if you want to survive. Life is not about having fun, it's about surviving.

If you want a roof over your head, you pay rent or a mortgage. If you want medical help, you pay insurance. If you have kids, you may want to help them get to adult hood. After all, you will need to prepare them the best you can so they can compete with their peers.

Most people don't know much about history. If they did, they would appreciate the life they have now. How many, given the chance, would really choose to live in the Middle Ages or any time in most past centuries?

I woke up this morning, looked out my kitchen window and saw that lots of birds in my yard were competing to get a spot by the one feeder that still had food in it. They were doing what every creature has to do in life. They were trying to do what they could to survive to live another day. So I did what I needed to do to help them. I went out into the cold and refilled all the feeders. I came back in, made some coffee and sat back to see dozens of birds, finches, doves, woodpeckers and cardinals, all enjoying their morning feeding. My wife came over and gave me a hug. She had noticed me looking at the birds feeding and the fact that I had a smile on my face.

So come on people, stop whining about your luck in life. Do something for some other creature, whether human or otherwise. That's what life is all about.
