Just think how much more they could get done if the union supervisors put down their clip boards and helped out. I'm glad I live and work in a right to work state ,don't have to worry about the thugs .

Linesmen, in order to be called linesmen, have to know how to be linesmen. Union card or no, it's not like they rounded up unemployed burger flippers and said, "You're a linesman now, boy, you're going to New Jersey". Don't want non Union help? Enjoy non Union darkness and rotting food while the Union is on break.

I live well because my wife is Union. I saw all I needed to see with Union Stevedores. I'll pass.

Alabama power companies are denying a local TV station's report that linemen who had traveled to New Jersey from Alabama (a right to work state) to help restore power to those hit hard by Superstorm Sandy were told they could not work there because they were non-union.

Ya know, the last time I was in Alabama, they had lights. I wonder how that could have happened without union electrical workers. I guess they must have imported some from NJ.

Whether a person holds a union card or not has absolutely no bearing on their competency in their chosen trade.

I happen to be a union Electrician and damn proud of it, I'm sorry most of you don't like people making a decent living and or belong to a skilled trade, I guess i know which lever your pulling , last week you were a carpenter, plumber or maybe just a know it all and this week your an electrician, save us all some grief and go wire your neighbors house, I'll fix it when your done...... Jeesh there rebuilding the power grid in those areas not wiring toasters.

Probably not much of a fight, no flood insurance and a flood hits.

My boss had a house in Louisiana, Katrina hit and severely damaged it, insurance wouldn't pay for most of the damage even though they had hurricane coverage. It was a storm surge that did most of the damage and that wasn't covered.

And what the hell does that have to do with anything, someone puts on this site a flat out lie and all the haters come out of the woodwork about unions, The alabama gang is there working, all the BS over nothing, that should be the point, not whether I'm there or not

The furor should be about bias in the press. They intentionally reported a falsehood to incite class distinction and turn a good deed into a story.

X2 and When we get personal here it's sad - the no politics - religion rules are in place because those discussion often end in personal attacks. The no personal attacks rule is just good manners.

Since when do you have to be in a union to be a ticketed line man? Two different things. It begs the question that if the situation were in reverse would the Union guys offer to pack up and go help others in need? I am on a union pension, and darn glad to have it . I was involved in Union comity business and have seen the good side of it and the bad side that gives it a bad rap. In this case there was a huge lack of common sense!!

Bill Yell, spokesman for Huntsville Utilities, said nine of his employees are currently helping with recovery from Hurricane Sandy and had no union-related issues. "That's a rumor," he said. "We are starting work this morning with Long Island Power Authority. We were headed to a New Jersey utility but they had all the crews they could handle."
A spokeswoman for Joe Wheeler Electrical Membership Cooperative said the crews from Trinity also are assisting with storm recovery and, in fact, are unionized.

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers President Ed Hill said in a statement:

It is the policy of this union and the companies we represent to welcome assistance during major natural disasters—regardless of union status. There have been reports that a nonunion crew was turned away from work in New Jersey. At this stage, it is not clear who is alleged to have turned the crew away and the company that employs the affected workers has denied the claim. IBEW local leaders in New Jersey have reiterated what has been the long standing record of our union—in times of crisis all help is welcome and we pull together with everyone to meet the needs of the public.
