For trimming low hanging overhead branches along the route into our campsites we carry an extendable fiberglass manual pole saw pruning device with rope operated loper available at your Stihl dealer, or at hardware and garden supply stores under the trade name Fiskars. Easy to store in a lower bay at about 6.5 feet long while colapsed, the device extends to allow us to reach about 16 feet above ground. As well, we carry a sturdy anvil loper and a pruning saw for branches we can reach from the ground. A set of hand pruning shears round out the arborist tools we carry to protect our coaches roof mounted accessories and exterior paint finishes.

These hand operated devices are virtually silent in operation and don't pose a fuel odour or spill risk. They tuck away easily alongside and under the slide out tray in our basement storage area.

We have found carrying our own pruning tools quite useful for protecting our coach, and clearing a path or improving a site for the next visitor. In several instances where we have asked permission to do branch trimming our volunteer efforts have been welcomed by the Provincial or Federal Parks staff whose budgets have been "trimmed" to short to allow paying their own staff to do such work. It is best to ask before doing any helpful pruning though, as some Parks staff are vigorously opposed to visitors making ANY changes to the natural environment that they are charged with supervising. Court appearances and significant fines can result if you are apprehended for unauthorized pruning.

Good point on the hornets...my 84 year old neighbor asked me to help him build a fence on the back side of his 160 acre place. We trimmed trees and drove fence posts without any issues until he drove his four wheeler over a downed log. The big yellow jackets swarmed both of us and we got hit several times each. Man that hurt and made old Charlie sick. My wife (anesthesia provider) insisted he stay with us in a spare bedroom until he recovered. She told me to suck it up, go figure!

Yep,,, got stung 7 times in about 2 minutes while pounding fence posts in our current home... They were living in the ground.... Must I say "WERE" ,,,, I burned them out the next morning after finding the two holes in the ground.... I had no idea....

Diatomaceous Earth is a wonderful killer for bees, ants, spiders and any other similar insects. Mist it into their nest, hole or where they run. To them is is like sharp glass shards and also will dehydrate them. Not real quick but cheap and effective. Harmless to us and our 4 legged pals. [Good for causing ticks to release/die also.]

I bought a commercial pole saw (Power Pruner) 20 years ago, that I have been using to trim trees on my property. I generate most of my firewood just by pruning my oak trees. There's no way I would carry the power saw with me in the MH. If it's too big for a manual pole saw or handsaw, you probably shouldn't attempt to cut it. Besides, the real work begins after it's on the ground. It takes 2-3 hours to clean up what I can trim in an hour.

I carry a set of big clippers and a small tree saw. If I need anything bigger to trim a limb, I move to another space.
