As a former police officer there were many many times I used discretion when issuing tickets. Here are a couple of examples:
1. Spotted car with tail light out, intentioned to simply give a verbal warning. However after being called many things, most of which I could never repeat, I ended up issuing 5 tickets which he was required to appear in court.
On each ticket I made a notation to the judge (by instructions from the judge) AH***, once in court the judge lectured the violator "sometimes you may be able to sweet talk an officer out of a ticket, but it will be a rare occasion that you ever son-of-a-b***h an officer out of a ticket.
2. Many many years ago when things were different an occasion happened when I came upon a group of young men one being a minor the rest barely not minors, all but the driver were drinking and has a cooler full of beer in the trunk. Being back logged on work I gave them an option to destroy the 'evidence' or I impound daddy's car and everybody goes to jail. Three of the four immediately begin popping tops and pouring the beer out, but the 4th being quite drunk argued that I could not make them do that, the driver punched him out and said, excuse him officer , he is not feeling well, I laughed so hard and no one was arrested.
