'Sun Dogs' in Arizona??

On Sunday my wife and I were driving around the countryside south of Tucson and we saw what looked like 'sun dogs'. The sky was mostly clear and the temps were right up there. Maybe in the mid 70s. We saw bright spot on either side of the sun. Exactly what we would see at home in Manitoba on an extremely cold winters day. Actually an indicator that the temp are very low.

Does anyone know what these spots are really called and are they common.

The Manitoban needs to know!!

Thanks

Stan

they are very common, and are really called sun dogs. refraction of light passing thru moisture in the air. in arizona, they are not an indication.
nothing in arizona is ever an indication of rain, other than rain drops. even then, it can rain where you are, and not rain ten feet away.

That sure sounds like sun dogs, used to see them on clear winter days when I was in Minnesota, Never seen them in CA or AZ while living there. In MN when you saw them you carried extra wood in for the fire.

Thank you all very much for the interesting replies. El Diablo googled up as a devilish thing or a mock sun. I'll go with the mock sun. Sun Dogs it is.
