Supper or Dinner
Up here in my part of Michigan everybody calls the meal you have in the evening "Dinner". I never heard it called "Supper". It's usually around 5 to 7 pm. What do you call it where you are, and what time do you usually have it? And what the heck is the difference anyhow?

Good question. My wife is from souther Minnesota and we spend a month or two every year up there visiting family. They have always called the mid day meal Dinner and the evening meal Supper.
I'm from California and we always called them Lunch and Dinner.
We're now in Arizona and here it's Lunch and Dinner as well.
I don't care much so long as you don't call me LATE for either.

Mid westerners and farmers call them breakfast dinner and supper. Probably because the big meal was served at noon time, and a lighter meal was served later around dark.

We have Supper at home around 9:00PM. We "go out" to Dinner (Both life-long, 5th generation Texans)

Born in Boston, Breakfast, lunch and supper. Now in Florida breakfast lunch and dinner. Food at each taste same to me.

I don't think there is any diference between the two. My DW and I were brought up in Connecticut in neighboring towns and when ever I mention the word supper instead of dinner I am instantly corrected. You would think after 43 years she would give up trying to correct me. I really don't care so long as it tastes good.

Ha! Here in Alabama we have breakfast in the morning, lunch midday, and supper around 6:00pm.
Dinner is usually a nice meal eaten at a restaurant particularly Sunday afternoon after Church.
Funny how meanings change with geography!
Some of our best friends live in Minnesota and we have the best time poking fun at each other! They always want to hear y'all and kid us about sweet tea and grits!
We really enjoy the differences.

Growing up supper & dinner we're kind of interchangeable. Although I got the impression supper was lighter (soup & sandwiches) served on the everyday dishes, dinner was for roast beef & yorkshire pudding served on the nice dishes.

Webster says "dinner" is the main meal of the day and "supper" is the evening meal especially when "dinner" is taken at midday. I was raised with breakfast, dinner or lunch for the midday meal, and supper in the evening. I agree with Ricko, you can call it anything but late! But what about if you eat breakfast for supper?

Dinner was around noon unless you just had a light Lunch. Supper was always the evening meal....until I married a city girl and all they have is breakfast, lunch and Dinner.

MS/LA gal, and we ate breakfast, lunch/dinner, and supper. Dinner was never the evening meal.
