Terrible Bus Crash

I seen on the news this morning a tour bus returning from Vegas to Vancouver BC, has crashed in Oregon. It reported 9 dead. Wow. It looked from the pictures that it rolled several times down an embankment. It looked pretty flattened out. I don't know the reason why.

Icy roads, that happened on Cabbage Hill just east of Pendleton. I lived not far from that hill, I hated driving it, in fact, when I left Oregon this past November to head toward New Orleans, that was the hill that worried me the most.

If you have the Mountain Directory, West, here's what it says in the Introduction to the book, "A highway patrol officer in Oregon told us that in the summer an average of one motorhome per week burns to the ground while trying to climb Cabbage Hill on I-84 east of Pendleton."

The loss of life could have been much, much worse. Very sad.

While I too think this is horrible, the really unusual and interesting thing is in the comments at the end of the story.

Nine killed, more than 25 hurt in Oregon bus crash: state police | Reuters

some of you will have a problem with the comments, but it is telling about
"Never let a crisis go to waste" mindset....

The last time I got trapped in a snow storm/blizzard on that route heading south east to Baker City, Oregon, I said, "If we make it this time, we are NEVER driving this again in the winter". So, we flew to Boise from Portland for Christmas and really enjoyed the trip much better knowing we did not have to worry about the road conditions going either way. I'm a little poorer but here to tell about it!

Regarding those comments... When I read I tend to assign a "Tone of voice" to the words I'm reading..

The comments about banning these high capacity busses and such.. Sounded "Sarcastic" to me.

But yes, never let an oppertounity to use a disaster to sway opinion is, it seems, a common thought now days.

As to what they were really commenting on.. I'm kind of on both sides of that fence so I'll shut up now.

Northeastern Oregon is not a place to mess around in during the winter. What baffles me is why the driver picked the route he did at this time of the year. Considering where they were, why not over to I-5 then straight north?

Eastern Oregon is not the problem. It's the idiot drivers that are the problem. There are literally thousands of cars, trucks, buses, and RV'S that travel there all winter long. While this maybe a tragic situation, one should not lose perspective as to where the fault lies. Jmho

I live in Oar-E-Gone and I know better. As to "where the fault lies" is an interesting question, which goes back to my previous post. 'Why that route in Winter?'

Yes yes yes! You live in s. central ore. The only way you could live farther from the scene is in Brookings. I've been traveling e. ore since 1962. I am very familiar with that whole area. It is the idiots driving no matter what road/ route they are on. Look at I-5. Flat and still people seem to prefer the ditch.
