Thanks, Ken. You, too, have provided lots of good information.

My decision was already made before I posted - SigSauer 250 9mm. I viewed it as a compromise on size vs. power. I felt the DAO gave me some extra protection against the gun going off when I don't want it to. I do understand the safety concerns because I used to shoot competition in small calibers and we had safety drilled into us. My first 50 rounds with the new gun would have gotten me qualified but I didn't shoot any of the rapid sequences required. I want to take my time and make sure that I'm comfortable before I dive into the class. That is probably quite a few more rounds of practice away. My groups are pretty tight but I think that I might have a sight adjustment issue at longer ranges. I'll assume that it is my problem until I have a couple of more consistent outings with similar groupings.

I think your suggestion about the defensive shoot class is a good one. I'll poke around the area and see who offers what. I'm in no hurry.

I also understand that I have a lot of study ahead of me. Frankly, I didn't plan to carry consistently outside of Texas but wanted something besides a shotgun available in the RV when we do travel. The Texas CHL gives me a few more options with that.

As for shooting at the CHL class, they don't grade you. They just make sure you can keep it on the paper and hit a man silhouette at ranges up to 15 yards and you shoot a total of 50 rounds. They did not have us shoot any really rapid fire sequences. We had some load 5 and then fire 5 rounds.

I had not shot anything but a 22 cal pistol for about 15 years and used a range gun and had no problems. Now I get to shoot about once a month and will burn 200 rounds.

One thing you do need to check after you have run 200 rounds or so through the pistol is run one partial magazine of you personal protection rounds (yes they are expensive, but necessary) to make sure your pistol will feed them OK and not malfunction.

Best place I have found for the 9mm rounds is Walmart , Federal ball rounds. Just under $10 for 50.
