Sorry to say english is not the official language. As pointed out in above post, it has been on the voting ballots of several states, and passed by some, only to be reversed by the courts on appeal. Its really an expensive proposition, with bi-lingual education being mandated by some states, printed material in several languages, drivers licenses exams, and on and on. As someone on this forum has in his signature line, "Why should I have to press 1 for english"?

Years ago it was said that San Francisco printed it's election ballots in 25 languages (or some such number) so that everyone residing there could vote. I bet cost a pretty penny.

It's really odd new Americans have to have a working knowledge of English yet we have citizens who do not speak English or speak it poorly.

Yes you can read a red newspaper. But after you have finished the red newspaper you have read the red newspaper. And the lead story was about lead paint. So you read the lead lead story in the red newspaper.

As I remember from the Civics class my kids took in school, the choice of English as our "working" langauge only beat out German by one vote. It reinforces the concept that, yes, your one vote matters!
