Random Act of Kindness

This is one I have done often.

While going through a drive-thru at a local coffee shop, I will tell the attendant I will pay for the customers order behind me as well. They always ask "Do you know them?" I say "No, but please give them this note instead of their bill"

I've usually have time in the lineup to make a note like this:

"You don't know me, but I hope this random act of kindness somehow makes your day! Please pay it forward and do something unexpectedly for someone else today"

I never know what that person will do, but hope that it worked the way I suggested.
My payback is it just makes me "Feel Good" doing it! I get way more out of it personally than the couple of bucks I've spent!

Wow Les! What a great thread!

I have been on the receiving side of kindness many times. I try to pay it forward whenever I can. Back in the early 80's I was managing a busy 7-11 convenience store in Arlington, TX. One of my best employees was a young mother with 2 small kids and an abusive husband.

One payday she told me she was giving notice. The next paycheck would give her enough money for bus tickets to where her parents lived. She had finally had enough spousal abuse. I was stunned. I didn't want to lose my best clerk, but this was the first I'd heard about the abuse.

I found out she was only $50 short of her goal. I asked if she could be ready to leave tomorrow if she had enough money. We both cried when I dropped her off at the bus station 2 days later. She promised to payback the $80, but I told pay it forward. I was paying forward by helping her.

Thanks for starting this thread. I'll be back to read all the stories here.

Many, many years ago, a local bridge (the Tacony-Palmyra) between Philly & Jersey had a 10 cent toll. It was a regular occasion to get waved through as the previous car paid for 2. Sometimes a big spender would pay for 10. Can't tell you how many times I was either the recipient or the benefactor.

Very nice Barb!

Acts of kindness are the gift that keeps on giving when we reflect back at those times. Feels Good just remembering.

Thanks Larry!

This just proves its not the value of the gift, but the thoughtfulness behind it!

$.10 for a smile. Pretty cheap at twice the price I'd say!

I still carry a 75' steel cable with hooks on the ends in my 4x4 and get the pleasure of towing someone out of a ditch in the winter at least once a year.

Half the fun is using my 4x4 and the other half is telling them It's free!

In the mid seventies, some where in Tennessee, we pulled into an area with a restaurant/gas station for that "pit" stop. We were both hungry and full of "vinegar." When I went to the food line, Earlene was telling me to hurry up. There was a couple there trying to communicate with the clerk what they wanted to eat. I never really learned French but I understood enough to know they were ordering the chicken dish so I stepped in and did the very slight interpretation for them.

I discovered that they had broke down. I had some tools so out to the parking lot we went. Found the by-pass hose to the radiator was leaking causing the motor to overheat. (Those were the days when you could comfortably work on vehicles.) We did our best to communicate and off we went. I drove him 20 miles back into town and we picked up a hose, then returned and I installed it for him. Found out they were from Paris France, on vacation, headed across the U.S. and on down into Mexico in the used purchased car. He wanted to pay me for my help but I refused. We went our separate ways. Most of our communications was sign language.

No ugly American on that trip.

I truly believe that, "What goes around, comes around."

There have been other incidents, but hey, I'm old and forgetful.

Thanks for sharing Wayne!

Karma isn't always a Bitch! There's good Karma too! I believe that!
Just cause you're old and forgetful, I'll bet you can still remember how good it felt driving away from your deed in spite of the language barrier. Many wouldn't have bothered. Good for you for taking the time to follow through.

I help every chance I can this past month I was up on mt antaro Colorado there was a guy in a jeep that blew his clutch and didn't know how to change it. so I went down the mountain got all the tools I would need in my jeep. the next morning I went up and repaired his jeep. And the end he asked what do I owe you. I said pay it forward. And smiled. He tiered up and hugged me. Another time we was at a GC and a fellow mutant said they have a roof leak so I climbed up on their rv and repaired it. And Barb supplied the estabond tape. Then Barb ' s frig. Broke. So Barb and I pulled the frig. And repaired it. Both times I said no to money and said pay it forward. And boy did they! a few months back my transmission went out and they (muntans) pulled together and got me the money to get it rebuild. So it does come back around.
Thanks for a great page.

I seem to remember a recent hailstorm in Arkansas that had mutants scrambling everywhere to help seal up and then replace roof vents for those who couldn't climb up there.

Thanks for a great story Dwayne. I know this is a big part of your character.
Payback is not why we do it. It just good for the Soul!
But, man....it's sure nice when it somehow comes back when we're in need.
