The king really is dead
Elvis really is passing into history, I guess.
When a fast food place asks for my name to call when the food is ready, I tell them Elvis, just for fun and since my name is fairly common. The under 20 cashier will key the name in and it prints on the receipt. The last two times I gave that name, here's the way they appeared on the receipt: Alvez and Alvice.
Now I think I speak fairly clearly, and using that name used to at least elicit a snicker. Not any more. Not even a glimmer of name recognition. Or maybe the kids just can't spell.

Yep, I'll do the same kind of thing. I'll ask the younger person if they know how much "two bits" is. They don't. I'll ask if they know who Frank Zappa was. They don't. Did you see Jay Leno the other night. The people on the street knew what "www" was but not "WWII".
Them times is a changing.

The kids can't spell. Seriously. I wonder what they are teaching them in school.

Us too!! We "inherited" two grandkids when my step daughter died. I'm continually amazed at what they do and don't teach anymore! My father taught school for a few years and my mother taught for 33 years so maybe I'm a little "closer" to the school system than some.

It's easier to teach a person to push a button and have a machine think for you , than it is to teach someone to think for themselves... Just more fodder for the large corporate machines taking over our society ... for Profit only ... Not for the good of "We the People " ...
Everything reduced to a video game ... mindless operators for the Military Industrial complex run by the oligarchy ...

Back in the mid 80's, I managed several 7-11 stores in the arlington, TX area. Since we sold beer all clerks had to be at least 18 and most were high school grads. I was amazed how many could not make change without using the amount tendered key. Then if they entered the wrong amount tendered they were totally lost. After a few disaterous new hires, I started doing a "make change" test as part of the interview process.

Mama was a school teacher. I have a close friend in SoCal who is a preschool teacher, another SoCal friend who is a substitute teacher, and my sister is a teacher in Texas. The tales they tell about over regulation, administrative mismanagement, problem children and parents (especially the parents), and student reports out the wazoo would be enough be enough to wake the dead and scare them to death!

I worked in a convenience store for a few years to supplement my pension until Social Security could kick in (wound up quiting two years before because I got fed up with corporate stupidity). I frequently got to see the job applications and could not believe how illiterate the applicants were. Even most of the managers' writing skills were grade school level.

If I was looking to hire somebody and I saw some of what passes for a resume today I wouldn't be hiring very many people.

Yep, try handing them pocket change to make your change back come out even and see what happens!

There is a sign in a barber shop I used.............
Hire a teenager, while they still know everything.
That pretty well sums it up.
