The Masters

It was quite something seeing Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus tee off at the Augusta National Golf Club.

I am not a golfer but I do like to see history in the making.

I seen that today as well and was thinking wow, I haven't seen those guys in a long time. Arnold Palmer was always my favorite.

The rhubarb over the ban on female membership is getting a lot of air time since the CEO of their major sponsor (IBM) is female. The club top brass is trying to hide the issue as an "internal membership question" and maintain their men-only membership requirement.

I hope IBM says "no membership for our head honcho, no more sponsorship". It would get the attention of those sexist Neanderthals that run the Masters.

Actually if IBM pulled out it would not matter to the Augusta National Membership. About 10 yrs ago Martha Burke, a femine activist, tried to force the issue of female membership and called for a boycott of the sponsors. The then tournament chairman Hootie Johnson decided he didn't want to expose the sponsors to the controversy so the Masters Tournament went two years without a single sponsor! The club funded the whole cost! The membership's net worth is many hundreds of billions of dollars so sponsors really are not necessary for funding.

Also there is no policy to exclude women. They just haven't decided to offer a membership to a woman. It is a private club that get's no public support so there are no federal ability, and there shouldn't be any, to force the issue.

I remember when Tiger first went to the Masters, his dad who was caddying for him was sent to the servant's entrance. Junior smoked the field, Hootie and the old boy's club were not amused. The time will come when the PGA will have to move or phase out the tournament, a changing world will no longer tolerate such antiquated ideas and the dinosaurs will be left out in the cold.

They do have an interesting history on these issues. Didn't they actually take action about 20 years ago when the PGA said they would no longer hold events at clubs which had no black members? Other than that (if my memory serves correctly) they have dug in their heels on issues when they feel they are being pressured.

The Masters is not a PGA or USGA run event so the PGA can't move it. The only PGA connection is the tournament prize monies count on the official PGA money list. The tournament is run by the Masters Tournament Committee. It is an invitation only tournament and the Masters Tournament Committee extends invitations based on a specific list of criteria.

Also Tigers first visit to the Masters (1995) resulted in a 41st place finish as an amateur. In 1996, as a pro, he finished 60th. It was 1997 when he finished 1st.

You are correct in the fact that the tournament has, in the past, had a poor history of racial equality.

What the hell do you know?

Seriously I am on the side of the club. If women want a specialty golf course let them build one. The women came out saying they wanted suffrage; so let 'em suffer.

Some traditions shouldn't be messed with. I do not follow golf nor like golf nor understand the concept of "fun" trying to put a small ball in a whole a great distance away from me. That isn't my point. Not being sexist either, but women have their own golf organization...correct? Bowlers do as well. Many activities are gender based and gender biased. So think about this.....What will everyone say when little Johnny wants to be a girl scout? or Little Sally wants to be a boy scout?

It's all trivial and I will not worry about it, nor dwell on it.

IMO there's no question that the club has the legal right to restrict their membership to men only. The challenge they and their membership face is the publicity backlash. The club clearly doesn't care a bit about what the public thinks but their membership might not have that luxury when these captains of industry begin to get questions about why they would be a part of such discrimination.

Actually, the men, women and junior bowlers are now all rolled up into one organization. Women can bowl on mens leagues and men can bowl on womens leagues. You still have to purchase a separate "sanction" card in each though. I'm an avid golfer, and as much as I like the traditions of golf (etiquette, collared shirts, etc.), I think the "good old boys" at Augusta are in the wrong on this one. I, as a woman, should be free to join any golf club in the US. The Elks organization was once a men-only club, but they now have women membership as well. What/who would it hurt? Give me ONE good reason why it would be a hardship to allow women to be members at Augusta.

That is their privilege just as excluding females is The Masters'.
