Just stopped at a Flying J in Bakersfield CA. These people couldn't find their Ass with either hand. I gave them a $300 pre pay and went back to the pump to turn it on. It pumped $23.40 then shut off. When I went in to ask what was up they acted like I was an idiot and did not know how to pump diesel. They then sent out a pump tech who could not get it to work either. He then went back in as he said his radio was not working and they could not hear him. Next came a low level manager who acted like if I do it it will work. NOT!! Next they switched me to the pump on the other side of the coach since I can fill from either side and both the manager and the flunky left. Guess what it did not work either. I finally went in and got the rest of my money back and went elsewhere. They may never miss my money but I won't be back.

Brian,

I drive that route every other weekend. Used to stop there both ways when it was Flying J. Since They were bought out never stop. They used to be the cheapest fuel on my 200 mile trip one way. They are now one of the highest. I now get fuel north of them In Tipton or Tulare. Their Resturant has gone way down hill also.

Interesting, I used them several times on a recent trip back to Vegas from the Mid West and had no problems. They're now owned by Pilot however still got a discount with my flying J card.

I sent an e-mail to their corporate offices right after I posted this. So far no response. Guess they don't need my business that bad.

What station do you use? Is it easy to get into?
We go that way about 4 times a year.
The Quik Stop in Levingston has the best price most of the time.

In Tipton it is at the highway 190 exit. It is Valley market on the west side of 99. In Tulare it is at the Paige Ave exit. Don't now the name of the place. It is on the east side of 99. Pilot is on the west side of 99 but they are .10 to .15 cents more a gallon. Both the Tipton & Tulare places are within a penny of each other. And the cheapest between Visalia and Bakersfield. I have a stick house in Hanford and keep 5ver in Ridgecrest in the Upper Mojave Desert. Go between the 2 everyother weekend for the last ten years. So believe me I know where the cheapest fuel is between the two.

I have rarely had a good experience at Flying J. Too much going on to get decent service. Long slow lines to the cashier while others are buying their pep drinks and groceries. If you don't have 18 wheels, you are just an annoyance to them.

I use to drive truck nation wide and never found a decent Pilot. My 1st choice was always Petro and then FJ. My favorites were Iowa 80 and the independent truck stop in Grand Island, NE(can't remember th name). I don't know how they treat RV'ers, but pick up my MH in Jan. and guess wil find out

I use Flying J whenever I travel...close to 125K miles over last 15 years. Like any other business there are good and bad. The Bakersfield location was/is the worst I have ever used and I will not even use it for gasoline.
As far as J's are concerned I know I can get fresh fuel and have yet to have a fuel filter problem. Some of the new rules are irritating, but if I were in a hurry I would have left yesterday.

I guess over the years I must have become accustomed to questionable service practices and don't seem to think too much about it anymore, just get what I need, pay for it, and go

The Pilot in Florence honored my Flying J RV Card. I did go to a Flying J last year that was unable to pump gas and I had to relocate to another pump. They had just replaced all the old pumps for new ones and the device that monitors if there's a open hose was tripping the flow to a trickle.

That's about the only trouble that I have had at a "Hook". For me the Hook has been like an RV oasis on the country's Interstate highways. Some are better than others but they are not all the same.

Too bad the oasis is drying up. As has been stated in this thread, the new owners of Flying J seem to have a policy of if you have less than eighteen wheels, you business is not wanted.

Even though the website says the RV Real Value card is still valid, not a single Flying J between Florida and Texas would give me the discount for fuel, the Flying J on I-10 west of Houston even telling me that the RV card was no longer valid, and giving me a trucker's Frequent Fueler card in its place.

The Denny's restaurants are vast improvements over the Country Market buffets, though.
