I am the proud parent of three rescue dogs and spend a lot of time on RV.net in one of their pet forums. We always talk about someone "going over the rainbow bridge" when they pass on. One of the OPs on rv.net found the poem where it originated and I thought I'd pass it on...
Rainbow Bridge
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together "

That is beautiful. Thanks for posting it. I have read it many times but it felt good to read it again.

I saved your poem to the hard drive so I can re-read it when I think of SPANKY, my departed 13 yr old cocker. Thanks for posting.

I too have saved it. Our Benji has been with us since a pup and is now 15 years old. Dreading the day he crosses the bridge. Hard to think about....

I went through it with our first generation - 2 dogs, 1 cat and swore I would never have any more. Yeah, right...
I always say that the more I'm around people, the more I love my dogs

I get to feeling that way some days.
I always have trouble reading that poem. Last November we buried out 16-1/2 year old miniature schnauzer. He was #3 over the past 40 years and it is not any easier to loose #1. #2 or #3. WE have two more at home now.

Every time I read that I get teary eyed......thinking of Emmett, our beautiful black Pug who is there waiting for us. Emmett was a rescue and it took about 5 seconds to fall madly in love with him. We used to say, "If you think you aren't a dog person spend 30 minutes with our Emmett......you'll change your mind." He was 15 two years ago on Presidents Day. I had been out of town over the weekend and had Monday off. He loved to be wrapped in his blankie and held like a baby, so when he whinned at my side I wrapped him up and rocked him to sleep.......in his sleep, in my arms, he gave a deep sign and just quit breathing. Rick says he was just waiting for me to get home. I just know he is at that bridge, running and playing like a pup again. And begging a treat from everyone who comes by!
Thanks for the poem.....brought me some good memories.

Marilynn, I'm so sorry for your loss, but how beautiful that he waited for you and let go in your arms. That says a lot about your bond with him. Two of mine are pug mixes, although they don't look like pugs...
Donnagan is a Puggle, Quincy (mr. Ford) is pug/chihuahua/dachsund and Brenna (the white one) is a westi-poo. They are my babies.

Our Hannah is our only baby for now...(we are also owned by Jack, the Cat, but he probably won't ever travel with us.....we tried, but he HATES being inside a moving vehicle - so, too stressful for him). I know we'll get another dog someday.......we've actually been talking about it here lately. Your babies are beautiful, and look very loved.

Oh they're not loved - they're spoiled! My husband calls them "heatherns" But I can't imagine life without them and they are the only reason we're not putting our house on the market and living in the rv fulltime. These three are too rambunctious to live in an rv, especially when we both still work fulltime. Right now, they have a doggy door to the fenced backyard, so they're used to coming and going at will.

We too would never have a pet after our cat was gone, couldn't do it. Yea right! We now have Sophie our little rescue Maltese, poodle and some other stuff that weighs 12lbs. The way we got over it was to remember what a happy home we could make for some lost creature. It was a good decision !!!
However, I still can't read that beautiful poem.
