Been there, done that, and also got peed on. Well... it didn't hit me, but it did void itself. I learned recently from a Vet friend of mine that you really DO need to do the minimal moving--putting the turtle in the direction it was heading, but nothing further. They have a very small range/habitat where they know how to find food, water, shelter, and whatever else they need. If you move them too far away from their usual habitat, they can't find the things they need. Sounds like you did the right thing here.
The moral of the story, per my friend, is to help them achieve their safe crossing, but don't go overboard in your attempts to help them by going much further than just the grass across the road.
