Thoughts on America

This is from a CD by Charlie Douglas. In case you've never heard of him, he used to be a DJ on an all night trucking radio show, on WWL & WSM radio stations. He recorded an album way back when with humorus stories, kind of like Jerry Clower. This was at the end of the album.

“The pride of being a Southerner is an awesome and tangible thing to me, and my pride in being an American is equally as vast. As I love this land, and I was blessed with being born here. This is the land that God saw fit to allow us to use. It was born in the pain of revolution , and my personal pride swells a little more when I realize that I have ancestors from that war buried in this land. This land that was forged into one by that awful crucible of the Civil War. America, that very word holds a promise of hope to millions of people the world over. It’s the sound of the march of people who are doing good, the winds of grand achievement never dreamed of by those who suffered in the midwifery at Valley Forge, and Gettysburg, and I love, and have pride and great faith in this land that we call America. And if you share my fascination and my awe, and respect, and love for America. Then I hold my hand to you, and I call you Brother. If not, then I call you a fool, and I call you ignorant, and pitiful, and I do not call you an American.

Problems are here of course. We’re not perfect, our land will never be. But it is our land, and we helped build it, and never will I turn my back to this Country, and seek to destroy her. While rushing around and telling everyone I’m trying to improve her. Americans will answer whatever call is sounded, and the question is: ‘When our land calls, will you answer, will you care for her?’.

Personally speaking, We are blessed to be in this great country called the United States of America. In my life I have been to many places and seen many countries. Europe in the Mediterranean area and north to the Scandinavian countries. South to Mexico and to South America. And of course to our little sister to the north, Canada but I believe we as Americans live in the greatest country God ever created. I believe we have the greatest freedoms and the most opportunity for a person to make of themselves as their ambition and ability will let them succeed .... I respect all nations and all ''peoples'' but I think we live in one of the few countries that people are breaking the law to ''get into''.......
God bless our troops and bring them home soon and safe...
God bless our Vets ..... ALL GAVE SOME...SOME GAVE ALL .....

After 23+ years in the military, we have had friends we have met come and visit us. I always ask what their first thoughts were when they saw this country. In all cases, there was something majestic that they would speak of. It did not matter whether it was North, South, East, or West, there was something there to speak about.

On our last trip of 6000+ miles we discovered something. That is, it is impossible to see all that is wonderful in these United States by taking a "road trip." To really see what this country has to offer we have stated that we would have to visit each State and spend a minimum of 30 days in each state. I know that it would be impossible at our age, but we ARE going to slow down to smell more flowers.

We truly live in a wonderful area of the world, rich with its own history. I'm going to try and enjoy it.

Thanks for the link to Charlie Douglas.
