There was a Tootsie Roll factory by the railroad tracks we would ride our minibikes by
and they gave out samples too!
Near one of the Malls a store has a section for some of the old time candies, sometimes we have to get a couple pieces for the fun of it.

I remember that bar too..

There is a joke: "How much is a nickle candy bar?"

Of coures the answer today is in two parts.

First: the candy bar is a dollar, and Second, they don't make that size any more.. (Today's bars are smaller, so they need to re-name it TWO musketeers) Yup you get way less for way more now days.

I do admit I have seen at least one candy bar that was larger.. I think it was a Hershey's chocolate bar.. 38 dollars when I looked at it about 15 years ago. I forget how many pounds it was (Kitchen Glamor store,, it's used in cooking for a crowd)

How many remember Arnold Stang pushing Chunky candy bars? I wonder what ever happened to Arnold Stang. Wasn't Chunky the one that said "Chunky, what a chunk of chocolate!

Mini bikes!!!!!!! I had forgot about those. Our little mountain town had 2 mini bikes with 5hp B&S engines and they were not owned by anyone. Each kid could take it as you wanted ( some kids had those fancy Honda 50s) if you took it for the summer you had to provide 15 clothes hangers(brass of course) so the local garage could braise the frame back together each time you jumped the creek! The centrifugal clutch was $5 so we'd collect pop bottles all year before your turn and paid for the gas and clutch.

Red face A long while back

Lived in Portland Or, when I was about 8. Used to go door to door collecting newspapers, would load then in my wagon and take to an old shop down on Gleason. An old guy would come out Stoggie hanging from his mouth would measure
the papers with a ruler. Would get about 25 to 30 cents.. We had an old market we
would go and get a Look Bar, A Big Hunk and an ice cold bottle of Hires Root Beer.

Boy, you guys are bringing back memories. I worked in wholesale candy and tobacco for 17 years from 1966 on. I got drafted in 68 and came home later in 70 , candy had gone from a nickle to a dime....cigarettes had been $2.35 a carton and had gone up to $2.55. Nothing like the smell of chewing gum, candy and skoal. It was the best job I ever had.

How about the 5 cent coke. (before it went to 6 cents) And of course you had to buy a pack of peanuts to pour in the coke bottle.
