I thought it was John Crapper in Seattle Washington. Hence, the saying I have to go to the John.

Toilets were not invented by Thomas Crapper. He did improve it vastly so it flushed, had a built in trap and it became the fore runner of the modern flush toilet. The toilets before Thomas Crapper were not very sanitary and they were very odorific especially in the hot weather.

It does't sound as good to say John Harrington invented the tiolet. Oh I've got to sit on the Harrington.

I read somewhere, a long time ago, that the Phoenicians invented the flush toliet about 3,000 years ago.
