My husband read somewhere that you can use supermarket toilet paper if it says on the package "safe for septic systems" But now he can't find it to prove it to me. This would be a boon as the special RV stuff is highly expensive and you have to go to a special store to buy it. Not always easy. Any thoughts ???

Both Scott regular (1000 sheet roll) tissue and Angel Soft work beautifully in RV systems. All you need is a tissue that dissolves quickly.

Here's how to test; Fill a lidded jar 2/3 full of water and put in a couple sheets of your chosen toilet paper. Shake briefly and then see how long it takes the sheets to come apart in the water.

You can do this side-by-side with your expensive RV brand vs Scott or any other brand, and you'll see.

Senior Chief is correct and his suggested test is perfect. You just TP that will dissolve quickly in water and your good to go. Pun intended.

And yes it is safe to use in the RV.

And we have used Angel Soft and without problem.

The test stated above is a great way to tell.

I also use a clear elbow at the black tank discharge outlet to observe the flow. It's smooth, smooth, smooth. (no further description necessary.)

The Sewer Solution will blast the heck out of Kleenex but we use Angel Soft. The clear elbow works like a charm. Run the tank flush until the water is clear and everything is good

Scotts for sure. Never buy the expensive "RV" TP.

Up until about a year ago Scott tissue had on the back of the wrapper Spetic Safe and RV Safe, for some reason they took the RV Safe off the wrapper.
And yes do the test. Just about ant single ply is RV Safe.

30 years with regular toilet paper and never a problem. Use any paper you want.

Let's not make this too complicated. If they had their way marketeers would sell you special RV water, RV clothes, RV coffee, etc.

I am a full timer and retired plumber.

I use Charmin Ultra and have since I started RV'ing 7/06 and of course long before.

I tear off each square when I use it so it is not in a long string. Yes I use multiple squares. I have not had a single problem. I could fix it if I did.

It goes right through my macerator pump when I need to use the pump.

Toilet paper does not stay in the black tank long enough to decompose so all this talk about the proper toilet paper to use is just a bunch of nonsense.

The paper that disintegrates when shaken in a glass jar with water is not strong enough to do the job IMHO.

Costco brand here, no problems.

The "put in a jar and shake it" doesn't prove a lot. How does the black tank get shook enough to break up the TP if you sit in a campground for the weekend? It doesn't.

The only to shake the tank and break up the TP is to drive the coach down the road.

For 1desertfanny, no need to do the TP test, it has already been accomplished, by a 9 year old girl as a school project. The result? Even the slowest one to break-down took 75 seconds, well before you should need to dump the black tank.
