New account transponders are free in MA. Cost nothing unless they are used.

Tom, do you take the transponder out of the toad when you are towing it behind the motorhome?

Florida Sun Pass or E-Pass does NOT work in the EZ Pass states and vice versa.

There is no reciprocal agreement.

You will be charged a lower toll using an EZ Pass on roads like the PA Turnpike. The toll machine just senses only a large vehicle, counts the axles and charges for a heavy truck. When you buy a EZ Pass it uses the proper weight class for your vehicle.

Cover the transponder in your toad with mylar or foil to prevent a double dip! Sometimes (George Washington Bridge) it is less expensive to un hitch your tow vehicle and drive through the tolls separately.

HERE is another thread on this subject.

Don't know much about toll roads thankfully. Based in NC and mostly travel Nc/Sc and west,
we don't see too many. But that's apparently
about to change. Nc is planning I 95 tolls in the near future. More taxes...Sorry for the Independents!

I don't know of any toll roads in Michigan so you should be safe passing thru there.

Gene,

When I REMEMBER, I put the EZPass from the toad into a foil bag that they provided when I signed up. It usually stays in there until my trip is over, I'm driving the toad to a client and I'm about 10 feet from the NJ Turnpike toll booth entrance off I-78 when I franticly try to pull the transponder out of the bag and stick it to the windshield before going through the toll!

Thanks, I was wondering that. Crossing the Easton bridge would not be a big deal but going through the Chesapeake Bridge / Tunnel would be.

PA and NY give discounts on the EZ Pass.

Got caught at the Ches. bay bridge tunnel due to the winds being to high one time. Thankfully we were headed north so we did not have to to back track as far as going south would have been.

Florida"s Sunpass

A word of caution when using Florida's sunpass. I have a transponder for both the RV and the toad. Different accounts of course. I have to have sunpass review our accounts every few months as I have found I am being overcharged when towing. Sometimes being charged 4 axles on RV and 2 axles on toad at same time. I can and do check our accounts after every trip on our turnpike and toll roads in the Tampa area and other areas of Florida. Once even got a "toll by plate" on the toad while being towed by RV. After discussions with sunpass there is no way to turn one off or set axles because we didn't pay $25 for the portable transponder. BEWARE and check your account.

Here in the TAX ME STATE OF MD. Between the taxes and sooo called user fees to have an Maryland E Z Pass you will have to pay a monthly maintenance fee of 1.25 a month. Many people here turned them in and went through Delaware for them, no monthly fees. Just a thought. All things said you can't beat having one it keeps you on the move even towing. Jim
