Turbo Tax can be fine as well as some of the other do-it-yourself software but the government loves it when you use those programs. It is rare when someone comes to us who has been doing their own returns for years that we don't find that they left some money on the table. It may only be a few dollars but quite often it is a lot more. We had one guy who did his own via the on line programs and he missed a deduction that literally cost him several thousand every year and we could only recoup the last three years of his mistakes.
If all you have is Social Security and a pension then maybe you are fine, but most of us have more complexity than that. If you don't report all of your income the fine folks at the IRS will remind you of your mistake but if you don't take all your deductions then you are SOL (technical term......slightly out of luck or something like that). It may not be a bad idea for those of you who do your own to check with a professional, not the storefront TV types, after tax season to just review what you've done to make sure you took all the deductions to which you are entitled.
