We lived in Tyler for 10 years. Beautiful little city.
The Azalea Trail is spectacular. It starts March 20. Here's a link:
Azalea & Spring Flower Trail | Welcome to Tyler, Texas
There are some beautiful lakes in east Texas. My sis-in-law and her family live on Lake Palestine. If your son likes to fish, he can rent a boat at any number of marinas on several lakes in the area. And there are some fantastic lakes in the area.
Tyler State Park, just north of the city maybe 25-30 minutes, is a gem. There's a small lake there and some nice hiking trails, one of which encircles the lake. It's very wooded. There are some nice picnic areas in the park.
A lot of people really like Stanley's Bar-B-Q in Tyler. I was a fan of Bodacious Bar-B-Q. Everyone in the WORLD loves the barbeque pork ribs at the Country Tavern, with is in the middle of nowhere between Tyler and Kilgore (closer to Kilgore). If your son plays his cards right, he might get one of the VIPs at Trane to take him to the Country Tavern for dinner.
Also, some of the folks at Trane should be able to hook him up with some activities and sites to see in the area.
The Rose Garden really is amazing. But, I'm not sure there'll be much to see there in March. Wouldn't hurt to check, however.
Hope your son enjoys his visit to Tyler!
Mel

I used to travel to Tyer and Longview, TX every 60 days for work. Remember some pretty good restaurants on the circular road around the city. That's about it for Tyler.
Nice people, however.

I beg to differ that some pretty good restaurants "are about it for Tyler." There's everything there that any small city of 100,000 people has and some things that cities that size don't have.
You've got: movie theaters; several museums; a world-class/famous rose garden; azaleas in numbers that boggle the mind and draw thousands of people every year to see the "Azalea Trail"; Tyler Junior College and The Univ. of Texas at Tyler where you can catch very good theater productions, concerts of all kinds, sporting events, and lecture series; beautiful city parks; great restaurants; live music at numerous places on many nights; beautiful lakes with great fishing close to the city; numerous state parks from 25 to 90 minutes from the city where you can enjoy camping, hiking and fishing; a symphony orchestra that is quite good (you'll often be able to catch world-famous musicians who are guest artists); community theater; great high school football in the fall; beautiful places to roller blade, hike, or walk; historic buildings; and a lot more. (I'm just out of time!)
If you aren't interested in exploring all a place has to offer, you'll never find out all the things there are to do. If you do your research or talk to locals, you'll end up with a long list of things! And that's true of just about any place on the globe.

Just take a drive on the secondary roads through the countryside. Start of Texas wildflower season & Dog woods.

Oh, I forgot about the zoo! Look up Caldwell Zoo on Trip Advisor. It's a great place to spend an afternoon.
