Uber disabled automatic braking in fatal crash car

This was a topic of hot debate after the crash.

The truth is even worse.

Uber intentionally disabled emergency braking

The vehicle had 6 seconds to apply the brakes.
They are pulling all their self-driving cars out of AZ.

Whoever decided to disable the emergency braking system should be charged with murder. Was the woman in the driver's seat told it was disabled?

The back up driver was too busy playing on her phone.

No excuse for her NOT intervening....which was the reason she was there 'To Intervene'

I guess some people think that because it's a self driving car that you can recline the seat and take a nap.

Seems like too many people are willing to sacrifice safety for convenience or monetary gain. Uber disables safety brakes, people tow loaded over the capacity of the tow vehicles, exceed the speed, text.

I see it as a case of dumb and dumber. Pedestrians jaywalking are a moving target. Drivers playing games instead of watching are shirking their duty. I find little sympathy for either one.

Now I wonder how long it will be before the cars are back in AZ.

This tragedy could have been completely avoided had the automatic braking not been disabled. To me that is THE most important part of any autonomous system. People make mistakes, people have slow reaction times, people have trouble seeing under some lighting conditions. The CAR saw that woman jaywalking!

My point is that it was human error all the way. The machine did not decide not to execute the program. The woman should not have put herself in a position to force the driver to stop for her.
