We just had the Vietnam Moving Wall in Uvalde Texas for five days. If you have not seen it, it is a half size version of the one in DC. Even at half size it 252 feet long and about six foot high. It has all the names on it (approx. 58,000) of those lost in Vietnam. It is now on it's way to Commerce Texas, then to Garland Texas. The wall is not a political statement. It is simply a memorial to those we lost in Vietnam. The moving version allows those not able to see the one in DC a chance to experience it.

As part of our Regional Emergency Management team I manned the command trailer we had set up for the event for five days while we had the wall in Uvalde. I believe we had about 8,000 to 10,000 visitors and the town's population is only 13,000. People came over a hundred miles to see it. Like the wall in DC, rubbings can be made of the names and there are index books to assist in finding where a name is on the wall. Go see it when it is in your area if you can, even if no one you know is listed there.

We saw it when it made its first round a few years ago. Though I had no one close to me die in that war, it was a moving experience.

I had the privilege of assisting folks find names and seeing it in 2004 at bike week here in Phoenix. After spending time on the computer I found a few names I new from the old days of guys who joined after I did. I left for the service and never went back to Chicago. It was a total shock.
Like you said, it may be smaller but very impressive.

I saw the moving Wall several years ago and it tore my heart out. I have several friends on there. Three years ago we went to the Wall in Washington D.C. and it was even more overwhelming. I had to leave.

Our town has been very fortunate. It has been here twice. The first time in Sept. 1987 and the last time April 2004.
