I liked all of Crichton's work with the exception of Travels. In that one, he got so full of himself I would up tossing it before I got halfway through it. Pity he passed away.

How far in the past, read current events. We get manipulated daily by the media. Stock market prognosticators cause moves in the market, through the use of self fulfilling prophecies all the time.

Regarding global warming, back in the middle ages there was 'mini ice age' where Greenland was green, grapes grew on Iceland, and Europe was really cold (contributed to the Bubonic Plague). We are on the warming side of that trend. Man's influence on the world has and is altering the warming a bit. It was and will continue with or without our presence on the planet. Doesn't mean we can continue to abuse the world and it's other residents without bad stuff happening though. It is also nothing to panic about since we cannot really do anything to change the outcome, only the rate. IMO based upon my reading of history and current research, of course

Keep in mind that anything not in the present is in the past, even if only one second ago. I worded it the way I did to avoid it turning into a discussion of current politics.

My take from the book is the same as yours,My point is few of us have the knowledge to know what is going on,what is true, what is for gain, for money or politics. If you read 2 news papers there 180 degrees apart. Its hard to know what side to be on.
You can trust the goverment, ask any Indian.

Although worldwide glacier advancement from the polar icepack is believed to have started as early as the 13th century, the so called mini ice age didn't start until roughly the mid 16th century and lasted roughly to the mid 19th century. Prior to then, Greenland was greener (although not as green as Eric the Red, his son Leif, etc. claimed; that was an early real estate scam), Iceland wasn't as icy, and Europe, etc. was much warmer. Even during the so called mini ice age (experts disagree on whether it was true ice age or not), the weather wqas highly variable with peaks and lows in average temperatures during the time but the overall average temperatures were lower and many areas were also much wetter.
The plague (again, the experts cannot agree on exactly what the plague was) was introduced to Europe and spread rapidly due to the increased amount of long distance trade enabling the spread of rats and the plague ridden fleas they carried. It was not due to the mini ice age (although it's possible the cooler temperatures exacerbated it).

If 1000 master mechanics told you your engine needed fixing and one auto technician says it doesn't. Who do you believe?

Hmmm. I suppose if the 1000 master mechanics were caught in concert fabricating repairs I would go with the one honest mechanic.
