Weapons on the road
Hi all,
We plan on starting to spend approx. 9 months of the year on the road, starting next year, and was wondering about carrying firearms across various state lines in the motorhome.
Any input and / or experiences are welcome

Not a problem I have ever had. I keep a weapon or two in my home.
Don't try taking them into Canada. Could be big trouble.

I always carry some type of personal protection device with me, maybe more than one type too.

I bought a book at my local gun store with the rules for all states and referred to that. There are some states and indian reservations in the west that want guns and ammo separated, locked up, and inaccessible from the cab. A few don't want you have a gun in the motor home/car at all. There are also a couple of web sites you can check that seem to keep up to date on changes.
This is one site that seems to be good HERE
The NRA also has a info page HERE
I just looked at the CO info on the NRA site and noticed what I consider to be an error. The Castle Doctrine line says "No Law".
CO has a law but calls it the "Make My Day" law. Part of it says that if you are in your home you can shoot anyone that enters without your permission. They don't have to have a weapon and you do not have to be afraid for your life.

It varies state by state. I check this website. As far as I can tell, it seems to be kept up to date.

If you want to carry a handgun a good way is to get a FL CCW license since it is good in many states.
The other one is to make sure and cary guns legal in most states. As much as I like my semi-auto rifles, when I am able to set out on my nice long extended trip I will likely be taking a lever action 30-30 or 45-70 and a 1911. Good combo and legal in almost every state.

This source is easy to use. Click on the map that is your home state where you have concealed carry permit, and it will show you the other states that honor your permit, and which ones don't.
https://www.usacarry.com/concealed_c...city_maps.html
By the way, state laws can easily change as to who they will accept, I've seen a number of them change.

What about shotguns? I have a lovely 20 Guage I use for PP here in AK. Legal to transport through Canada too unless you don't use their declaration form. Sadly I will be selling my trusty .357 because it's harder to transport through Canada. OBTW, when transporting through Canada, your weapon isn't for PP. It's for shooting skeet or transporting through to US. Shotguns should be legal in all states, right?

I have WA, since I live there.
OR, since I travel there on business and they don't recognize any other licenses.
and Utah since it cover lots of other states.

I only have my WA. I should get my OR since I spend a lot of time there, but I typically just OC since it is legal. The only reason I have not done the OR or FL permit is lack of time.
I find it quite refreshing that many more states are going to permitless carry. Sadly it will be a long time before our Blue state does that.

As mentioned previously, a UT Concealed Carry Permit will cover you in quite a few states. Pay particular attention to the rules if you decide to venture into the NE.
The basic rule of thumb is the worse the neighborhood, i.e. DC, Baltimore, NYC, Detroit, the least likely that there is any good, legal, way to be armed, especially with a handgun.
All in all, a regular sporting shotgun is the best all around defense weapon to carry. It isn't real handy, but you can go almost anywhere with it, and it beats the heck out of having nothing.

We carry a 20 Gauge shot gun with an 18" barrel. Point and shoot. Long trips I will also bring my .223 critter rifle. Built a rack to store them upright in one of the cabinets. Easy to get to but you wouldn't see them even if you opened the door. Held in place with velcro straps so they are real easy to grab if you know they are there. Too many different carry laws to bring handguns.

Don't bring a AR or AK to CA, they are illegal there and they're trying to do that here in WA too.
