There is a hack to put it back/add it to this version of vBulliten.

I always find the post number right before I post it.

I grew up with correct grammar and punctuation required. I prefer it.

My children know how to write correctly and occasionally use that knowledge in interesting ways. My son once told me that it came in very handy. Apparently, he would enter a forum and be asked to state his age. He learned that a lie on his age worked if he remembered to use whatever level of grammar, vocabulary and punctuation were correct for that generation.

I think some of the twitter/texting shorthand that is used is simply habit now and the rest is laziness.

Either way, it matters but it doesn't matter, depending. It matters in that the better your use of the language the clearer you may communicate. It doesn't matter if you manage to communicate in spite of the texting shorthand.

My grandfather kept a diary of his time spent in the trenches in France during WWI.
You would not believe the grammar, use of the English language and handwriting (Script). His diary reads like something that today's grad students might write.
He had a fifth grade education, never went beyond grade school. Yet he ran his own auto repair shop through the Depression and WWII.
So yes, I do believe that today's youth has declined in the use of the English language. However, I don't believe it signals the decline of American civilization, it's just the way things have changed over the years. Like it or not (and I'm not particularly fond of it), it is the way things are and I think we need to either:
A) - Do something about it other than complaining,
or
B) - Accept the fact that cultures change and deal with that.

With all respect, I and others don't HAVE to deal with it. It's quite easy to just ignore those posts and let them go unanswered, as far as I'm concerned. If that comes under the heading of dealing with it, then so be it.

Why don't we go all the way back to Old English prose. They thought THEY were correct too. Sheesh...

What we have here is simple. Some of the older generation - who don't want to change - would prefer that everyone else abide by their understanding of what "acceptable" is. For cryin' out loud, get over it and move into the current state of communication. It is short, abbreviated, and is as easily understandable as the guy who wrote letters in a trench in WWII.

sheesh...

Keep up with the rest of us or don't reply. That's your choice. You think your not replying to posts you deem unnacceptable is gonna stop progress?? lol

Get over yourselves... Move forward... LEARN!!!

Love,

Jeff

Myself, I almost always copy my posts to Word for spell check, and I learned in my career to read a message before posting. You just can't take it back after it's said.
On the other hand if I run across a post that is asking a question I can help with, I try to answer it. If I just can't understand the question then I give it a pass.
What I don't do is post a response like "Google it". If I don't have facts and data then I can't help. Posting things like that just to get more campfires annoys me.

NLOVNT pointed out a post that she/he apparently finds offensively abbreviated. Here it is; and you can see this in a few posts above... "Hello I have a campground question, any feedback appreciated, l called Ortega Oaks in So. Ca. 4 a site 4 a weeks stay, and was told my 92 Dolphin was 2 old It needed 2 b a 2000 or newer is this common practice thanks Pallo"

Now, the person who takes offense to abbrevaited posts has a name called "NLOVNIT". LMAO

She/he wants to suggest abbreviated posts are unnacceptable yet her/his own name is abbreviated; "NLOVNIT"

Come on you hypocrites!!! Stop the BS and quit yer whining. I understand every bit of the post's point. If you don't then don't respond - period!!

And stop using names that are abbreviated!! Sheesh... My name is simple, "J" "PRIEST". First inital, last name. But the folks who want to criticize and suggest that the world is coming to an end use abbreviated - dare I say - un-understandable names for yourselves.

That is so wrong on so many levels!!!!!

Think about folks. Think about the mixed signals and hypocritical attitude.

Oh, I abbreviate my own name but call folks who use perfectly acceptable abbreviated text WRONG!!

You folks need to grow up and stop growing old.

Love,

Jeff

You're so quick to criticize, but you failed to see that She/he is Lori-.

"JC2" and "DUNNER", read the post she presented. If you can honestly tell me you don't understand what the poster was saying, then state your case.

In the mean time, address my issue with your names being abbreviated and yet you claim to be grammatically inclined.

Like I said, hypocritical.

Take care...

No more time to spend on this foolishness.

It is amazing what qualifies as "progress" to some people.

jpriest: Nobody here was being "offended" by anything. Nor were they claiming the end of the world or western civilization. Your trolling behavior isn't appreciated here.
