Ramblin, you couldn't have stated this better, I was thinking the same thing.
I guess my hope is that the posters who use the lazy shorthand method will poke around the site and discover that the overwhelming majority of contributors use proper grammar and actually check their posts before letting fly. (The edit option is a beautiful thing) Hopefully they will learn from that as well.
But for some posters to ignore and deny assistance because they used "2" for "to, or "ur" for "your"? Not cool, in my humble opinion.

Ok, you coaxed me out. I will go off-topic for inquiring minds. NLOVNIT is my user name as well as the personalized licence plate on my coach. It stands for and loving it. It has a 2-fold meaning. 1. When someone asks how we like RV'ing or how we like our Bounder, I say great and loving it. Someday I hope to say it about retirement. 2. My DH is a BIG fan of the 60's TV series Get Smart. Whenever the Chief or Agent 99 would point out Agent 86 he would be in grave danger for doing something, Maxwell Smart would reply "And Loving It." Seemed to be an appropriate handle for us here.
Now back to our regulary scheduled topic.....FWIW (oops, did I use shorthand!! ), this is an interesting & lively discussion. From our Community Rules

Our language is changing as more & more abbreviations & shortcuts come as a result of new technology. For some of us (me included), it takes a couple read throughs of a post with abbreviations/shortcuts, text-ez, missing punctuation...etc. Sometimes, I still don't get it & rely on others to "decode" & offer assistance. We do the best we can &, hopefully, those of us who've been around a while set the example on how to post in a forums-based society.

It is a bit of a fine line to walk when we try to help new members learn how to use the forum tools, while at the same time answering their questions.
As for the issue of written clarity, I do think to a certain extent those who have suggested it is a generational thing, are right. Many of us who are more senior and have lived in environments where showing pride in what we did mattered, hate to see someone asking us for the favor of reading and responding to their request not taking the time to make it easier for us to understand what they are asking.
IMO, it's as simple as that. Not the fall of western civilization and I don't believe anyone is losing sleep over any of it but it is an interesting discussion.

Not to prolong all this but have you looked at young people's handwriting?
I remember looking at the handwriting of my parents era and virtually everyone's handwriting was a work of art! It was perfect!
I think Doctors changed that! LOL
