What Has America Become?

I heard "Moby in the Morning" on K-BUCK FM in Louisiana read this "letter" that was written by Ken Huber and published in the IOSCO County News Herald in June, 2010.

It says soooo much! Sadly, it is so very TRUE!!!!!

Has American become the land of the special interest and home of the double standard?

Lets see: If we lie to the Congress, itís a felony and if congress lies to us, itís just politics; if we dislike a black person, weíre racist and if a black person dislikes white, itís their 1st Amendment right; the government spends millions to rehabilitate criminals and they do almost nothing for the victims; in public schools you can teach that homosexuality is okay but you better not use the word God in the process; you can kill an unborn child but it is wrong to execute a mass murderer; we donít burn books in America, we now rewrite them; we got rid of the communist and socialist threat by renaming them progressives; we are unable to close our boarder with Mexico, but have no problem protecting the 38th parallel in Korea; if you protest against President Obamaís policies, you are a terrorist but if you burned an American flag or George Bush in effigy it was your 1st Amendment right.

You can have pornography on TV or the internet, but you better not put a nativity scene in a public park during Christmas; we have eliminated all criminals in America, they are now called sick people; we can use a human fetus for medical research but itís wrong to use an animal.
We take money from those who work hard for it and give it to those who do not want to work; we all support the Constitution, but only when it support our political ideology; we still have freedom of speech, but only if we are being politically correct; parenting has been replaced with Ritalin and video games; the land of opportunity is now the land of hand outs; the similarity Hurricane Katrina and the gulf oil spill is neither president did anything to help.
And how do we handle a major crisis today? The government appoints a committee to determine whoís at fault, then threatens them, passes a law, raises our taxes; tells us the problem is solved so they can get back to their reelection campaign.

What has happened to the land of the free and home of the brave?

There is no question that our priorities have gotten skewed. I need look no further than my own area to find the perfect example of why we are where we are in the US. We are just south of Buffalo, NY. It is the second poorest city in the US. Only Detroit has a greater level of poverty. So what was the last city election like in Buffalo, NY. Would you believe that every single person who ran for City Council ran unopposed! Think about that. A city that is crumbling and rampant with corruption, poverty, and crime and everyone running for re-election does so with no opposition.

Think of the dumbest most out of touch person you can think of. Now realize that there vote counts just as much as yours. I'm not sure of the source of this particular quote, but it goes something like this, "The problem with democracy is that the people end up with the government they deserve!"

How many have really read or studied the constitution? Not many. Oh alot think they know about their rights but they have not researched the constitution. I don't mean to listen to someone else tell them about what they want you to think is in there. I mean really research on their own. You will be very surprised on what you find out.

What we have become is an oligarchy, by the rich for the rich. I am a social worker concerned with people, unfashionable among conservatives because I am concerned with people.
I would hazard a guess that the majority on iRV2 are very well off white old guys (I by the way fit the old white guy but not the wealthy. My retirement was killed by Wall street.

Very true. What bothers me the most with the US today is how the US has become a huge enabler. Accountability seems to be taken away more and more each day. Everyone can find an easy excuse not to work, not to come here legally, not to obey the law, etc and it seems there is always someone there to pat them on the back and tell them it's ok. When the economy tanked in 2008 and many people I knew were laid off and just seemed content to stay on unemployment and extended it, with very miniscule job searching efforts. I was also laid off, and my goal was to try to be employed before my severance ran out to avoid any kind of assistance. I don't balk at assistance, it is good to help people get on their feet, but too many people become dependent on getting a hand out. Unemployment is there for when it is needed, and I know we pay into it with our taxes, but I knew way too many people who were so content to not work for a year when they had opportunities to find another job, it just wasn't the "perfect" job so they did not bother.

I know I am far from perfect, and I am not even that old but I can't help but feel cranky sometimes about how most things are today in the US.

I really cringe thinking about what it will be like 20 years from now considering the direction it is headed now.

Maybe the majority are, but not me. I am a white female, not old, and far from rich. I'm not poor, I make a decent living (because I worked hard to earn promotions), but certainly not classified as wealthy by any stretch of the imagination.

Like you, however, I doubt I will have much in the way of retirement. When pensions were done away with and substiuted with 401k's by most businesses back in the 90s, I knew that was going to benefit the companies, not the employees. And true enough, my 401k has taken a real beating. I doubt I'll ever be able to retire.

Interesting comments, but who is rich? It seems like the populist definition of rich is anyone who makes more than I do. Let's blame the so called rich because they are the cause of all the problems. That's the type of rhetoric that makes so many of the problems we have. Look at my post before this. Do you think the "rich" perpetuates the problems of cities like Buffalo, Detroit, and Cleveland? Is that the result of the rich or is it the result of the so called poor just voting themselves more hand outs?

Consider that almost half of the US population pays no federal taxes. I can tell you that I consistently have people come into my office who get tax refunds of way more than they paid in due to massive federal handouts. Consider one woman who came into my office. She was a single mom with two kids. She was living in a very nice house with a guy she wasn't married to. She had a W-2 for $24,000. With all the Federal and NY handouts she ended up with a total of $11,000 in refunds. Now that also doesn't take into account her free medical care, free day care, free food, and so on.

Yep, those rich white guys sure are ripping off the poor, right?

I can't agree more. This is the land of opportunity and it is what you make of it not what others can do for you. I started working at 14 and every day after. I am well off now but I have lost everything twice over but it is up to me to rebuild. I did not do it on hand outs but made through hard work. Now there are those Who truly are less fortunate. DW and I plan to spend our retirement traveling and performing mission work. I feel there are those that are in need and there are those that just want.

Lots of words on what is wrong but I don't see any recomendations on how to fix it. Just looks like someone stirring up a hornets nest.

Utterly amazing! Corporations receive tax subsidies for shipping jobs overseas. The oil companies receive tax subsides for getting oil out of the ground. People lost their savings in the great wall market swindle. People are out looking for jobs and cannot find them, including my cousin who does not even list his law degree on his resume anymore. Yes, there are some who would rather collect welfare than work, but percentage wise, the corporations get more welfare in the form of subsidies and tax benefits than the working class receive.

My father put me on a tractor at age 5, told me how he wanted the ground harrowed, and turned me loose. I worked two or three jobs at a time all of my life and consider everything I have to be a blessing from God. My mother has always reminded me that when I see someone less fortunate than myself "there but for the grace of God go I." People can complain all they want, but I would rather count my blessings and work to make things better for everyone.

I'm not rich but I am comfortable and I EARNED MY WAY MYSELF - no quotas, no special treatment. I have ZERO Tolerance for anyone who injects the Class Warfare, Hate, Envy and Divide card. A veteran of the Cold War and Vietnam who studied our enemy, I recognize those things which eminate from the teachings of Hegel, Marx, Engels, Gramsi, Mao and Alinsky even if those making the insinuation do not! Our country began as a Constitutional Republic and sadly, too many people have no idea what is involved in retaining it and the rights and freedoms it affords!

I too lost much of my savings and investments as a result of the unnesessary rise in fuel prices, the housing market collapse and the market failure. I urge all of you who are so quick to cite bumper sticker slogans to HONESTLY investigate the cause of the 2007 - 2008 fuel price manipulations and the Senate hearing which dropped out of sight as soon as the report was made, the Community Reinvestment Act, [moderator edit] actions of ACORN against the banks who were froced to make bad loans, who benefited from the market collapse - George Soros is on record claiming over $! Billion from shorting the money markets, who else made billions from that market collapse and who is the recipient of the great majority of political funding from those wall streeters who were bailed out at taxpayer expense.

(If I ever wrote a thread killer, this is probably it. However, some things must be said - Political Correctness be damned - PC is nothing but censorship.)
