RA14868493 US Army 1964-1967. Cam Ranh Bay Vietnam 1965. In the picture I'm in my South Viet Nam Ranger Suit. Our unit was the first their (864th Combat Engineers) and a few or us were paired up with the rangers prior to us taking over Area Responsibility. *I needed to explain the Brown Bret so as not to piss off the guys in the Green ones.

Vietnam in 69-70 First Field Force, Na trang. RAxxxxxxxxxx. Big differance in attitude now from back then. Every person, man or woman should serve 2 years minimum and that might help fix some of the attitudes kids have today. Hearing is shot but hearing aids help. Thanks VA.

To NCTOX - same here, only my number had a US prefix because I was drafted at 18 years of age (served 1967-1969). That was the first thing we memorized when we got to boot camp. We were at the bottom of the pecking order after those whose service number had a prefix of NG (for activated National Guard) and RA (for Regular Army). We all knew each other's level of participation. Of course, when some RA guys complained about something, we delighted in reminding them that they "signed up for this #*@%".
My buddy got in trouble once when he was asked his service number. He replied, "fifty four million, two hundred forty seven thousand, one hundred and fifty four." The sergeant didn't appreciate the humor in a literal recitation. Maybe he was confused...
Despite it all, those were some of my happiest times and I still have friends from those days. And VA paid for my many years of university night schools.
I would also like to update my journey to be recognized as a VET to receive discounts at various home improvement stores. Texas now puts the word "VETERAN" on the face of new/renewed driver licenses when a DD214 is presented. It feels good to whoop that license out when asked by the salesperson for an ID.
I'd like to say also, "Thanks, America, for the opportunity to serve."
1973, retired 1996
Started out with the 19th SFGA as a 67N (UH1H crew chief). As the fall of Viet Nam was coming about, I was helping evacuate POW's. After 3 years transferred to a aviation maintenance company. Became a 67G (flight engineer). In the picture, I am in the back row. 2nd from the right. 1973. Many over seas missions, a year assigned to the UN. Operation Desert Storm, 1992, next was Somalia, 1993 and my last was Kosovo 1994. I had WAY to much fun!!!
And to all of you..... Thanks!!!!

Drafted, reserves, ANG during Viet Nam era. Luckily, stayed stateside and watched my unit leave as my time was weeks to being up. Moved over to reserves then transferred to the 109th NYANG - the unit that has the ski equipped Hercs now but had C97's then, serving the Greenland DEW line.

A lot different Army I was in, compared to all the Vietnam Vets, I believe "we" had it a little easier, more support from the American people, hats off to them.

Seems I get to be a young pup again. USAF 1978 - 1999, by time I left I was a relatively old man compared to the average airman. Started as a USAF DOD civillian employee in 2000 where I was once again younger than the average workmate gradually moving up to being an older employee when I retired from that last month. Now I get to be a younger retiree. I guess the downside is there isn't really a next stage where I get to be young again....
Thanks to all for their service, especially you guys that served when it was looked down upon by so much of the population. I lived through part of that era, but also the era where you were warmly greeted when returning from deployments, which has been more the norm since the first gulf war.
