I'm sure nobody knows the answer to this - but what is the % of the broader universe of members of the mentally ill that are "in need of help" and what % of people receiving some form of government support are just lazy members of society?

Just trying to wrap my head around the size of both problems. I hear about both all the time - one when a tragedy such as this occurs - and the other almost daily in one form or another.

And yet - I don't see much being done about either. TAZ - I don't expect you to know. It's just a sad situation wrapped up in more sad situations. Hard to believe this is the best we can do and progress in both areas is impossible.

Very good questions. No I don't have the answers, but I am probably more aware of the mentally ill than most people. I work in healthcare management in IT. The link of my career and mental illness may not be an obvious connection. But I work closely with clinical staf, security and law enforcement developing and managing the systems nessasary to address the issue. The problem is not black and white as we would like it to be. I wish I had the answer but the problem is bigger than me.

Yep. And me too. But I don't think it is bigger than all of us. Problem is - for any problem these days - you can't get our "leaders" (both parties) to even agree on what the facts are, much less find solutions. Yes - people are ill, there are cheats in the system, and children are dead. Beyond that - there are apparently no facts. Just opinions. I'm sure the founders are dizzy from roiling over in their graves.

Unlike our forefathers who were united in purpose, I think you nailed it on the head that our leaders are divided. As a country I think we are united in purpose and mission but divided in path and execution.

Actually I wasn't kidding about mom's left hook, it was a belt or switch when we were younger, but as we got older and if we mouthed off it was a back hand across the face. Not hard just enough to teach me to not mouth off.

I just went kiss my little girl on the cheek as she sleeps, I can't imagine what these poor people are doing. Not only the children that were lost, the adults as well. They are children in their parents eyes.

Just senseless.

I said it earlier in another post, I am 41 years old and my mom at 66 would still smack me if I acted up today.

My mom was an equal opportunity disciplinary, belt, switch, hands, stick, broom, whatever she had readily available to make us mind or P's and Q's.

My dad made us go out to the willow tree to cut a switch. We soon knew nuff ta cut a good one.
Seriously, wish they would actually protect the kids instead of playing politics. Shame on them!

Thanks for putting it back in perspective. I give my girl extra kissed these past days. I don't know how I would survive such a tragedy.
