One thing we might try is to not idolize the perpetrator of these crimes. CNN has spent the entire week airing nothing but the attack on Friday. If you were of a 'sick' mind, would you not look at the fame bestowed on the shooter as an impetus for yourself? This is NOT news, it is a networks way of generating story to keep them on the air. CNN are not alone, all networks follow suit. Likewise I don't need to hear of the grief of the families and how they are handling it. Leave them grieve in peace. The media should have left Newtown on Sunday already.

The day we moved in to the S&B home, my wife called me at the old house to say I had to come home right away. When I told her I was not finished loading and asked why (I still remember her exact words "Michael has killed Aunt Christy". THis was in 1996.

Michael was Aunt Christy's adopted son. He as in his late teens at the time. Michael suffered from mental illness. While on his meds was quasi normal. When off his meds he was a fiend. He stabbed his mom several times when she stopped over to his apt for a visit.

Legally he could not be forced to take his meds, he could not be locked up for his own protection or the protection of others when off his meds.

My wife drove past him walking down the street the night he killed his mom, she still avoids that street today.

The easy answer for me is if you can't make them take their meds, lock them away. If possible provide them help while locked away,, but lock them away.

I may seem a bit harsh but your rights cease when they begin to infringe upon the rights of others. Will not go into my uncle's opinion of what should be done with Michael.

Society, at least a certain part of it worked hard to protect Michael's rights, while ignoring the possible consequences of their actions.

After 10 years in the Navy, I understand the objective of, We fight for those who can't fight for themselves. At some point though, society needs to come to grips with if someone is a danger to others then action is required.
I can't imagine being so close to such an event. I am exposed to much of the mental illness issues and we struggle with getting legal orders nessasary to commit people to the help they need. I don't believe they need to be in the penal system. There are mental systems but not enough capacity in my oppinion. They get pushed out of the system when they are not ready and are not monitored. It is too easy for them to say they (the ill) are all better and we (society) are too quick to believe they have changed. Back into the mainstream they go and many are powder kegs. I agree we need to contain the risk.

I agree TAZ. Violence in movies and video games is totally out of control, but lawmakers will never restrict them because they are to powerful and hide behind the first amendment. Our children are desensitized to killing because winning a violent video game means you won, by killing off the others. Parents must shoulder some of the blame for that, by allowing their children access.
The U.S. used to maintain specific schools with trained teachers for children with varying degrees of mental illness that were specially-equipped to teach these children. "Main-streaming" popped into being, and IMO these special needs children are largely ignored because classes are too large for just one teacher to give every child the attention they need and deserve.

I really don't think anyone in the military seriously worries about invasion of the NA continent any more. 1942 was different. There was no effective surveillance. Countries had LARGE standing shipping capacity, and for the most part, shipping was considered to be fast....

The only country that has the future potential to pull off an invasion of the NA continent would be China. It would take an enormous effort on their part to assemble the required sealift and airlift, and it would be contested at every port of entry by every country in the western hemisphere. And what would be their purpose - to kill off their trading partners?

If they need "lebensraum" they need only to look at the vast unsettled spaces to their northwest. Russia is depopulating fast and would have to resort to a nuclear option to stop 'em.

This was a reasonable argument before the advent of overhead surveillance and other means of collecting intelligence - and when information transit took as long as people transit - but it's not really germane to current geopolitics.

I feel that there could be cyber attacks on our banking, electrical, etc, systems. I agree that our intelligence network is second to none;however, there are some well-trained terrorists who "specialize" in computer technology and could really raise havoc with out "systems". This is the "new invasion", if you will and far removed from what attacks, invasions and the like used to be. We all need to be vigilant and look after one another. My 2cents.

Kids are taught that they can interrupt when ever they have something to say, they are taught to call adults by thier first name, they are taught that everything is all about them (me, me, me). watching violent UFC fighting, violent video games, glorified violence in movies, watching porn on the internet at age eight combined with absent parents..........

I sure wish we could take a step back in time sometimes?
