First real scary one I remember was "The Day the Earth Stood Still" then "Creature From the Black Lagoon" and of course "The Exorcist" with Linda Blair. Years later I not only got to meet Linda but went to a cast party with her and Sue Fish (women's world motocross champion) after the filming of "Ruckus" up in Woodland, CA. ahhh.. memories

The Birds. Several of us kids went to see it one evening. In those days (I sound like a geezer!) we walked several miles to get to the theater and back. My home town in Nebraska is on the flyway in the fall for hundreds of thousands of starlings, a type of grey black bird. The starlings are out in the fields foraging during the day and fly back to the towns to roost in trees during the night. On our way back to our homes late that night we had to walk under the bird filled trees. The starlings were making the same noises we heard in the film. We did not linger.

Let me tell you a funny, but very true, story that happened to me. I was newly married & we lived in an old house that had been split into apartments. One night, Dave was working late so I was by myself on the couch watching the silent movie Nosferatu on cable TV. I had no lights on in the room. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something swoop in & out of the living room. I froze, for what seemed like an eternity & then it swooped in again, made a couple circles around the room & swooped out. The "it" was a bat. I screamed, thinking Nosferatu was after me, ran upstairs & locked myself in the bathroom & hid in the bathtub. That's where Dave found me, an hour later when he finally came home. We never did find the bat (it probably went back in the attic on the other side of the house), but I never watched a horror movie, home alone, ever again in that 1st apartment.

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

Alien. Opening night at the Esquire theater in Indy. Big curved screen with Sensurround, no advance publicity.

For the first 20 seconds or so of the chest burster scene there was absolute mayhem with screaming in the theater. When the creature ran off it was dead quiet except for several people crying. I've never seen a movie since that could keep the suspense building like that one.

The original Cape Fear and Psycho...and the original Frankenstein when I was young. There was a character walking around town advertising the film. For some reason that escapes me, I went in the theater and hid in the back row of the balcony hoping he would not come up that far.
