I gotta go with 'The Shining", although I think the book was way scarier than the movie. Its the only book I've ever read that literally gave me chills up my spine when I read it.
These days, "scary movies" are all about gore and guts. Whatever happened to real suspense?

On edit - Close second, "Wait until Dark" with Audrey Hepburn and Efram Zimbalist jr. The only movie I ever watched from start to finish at a drive-in.......

I'll have to agree on the book - while I was reading it my wife asked why the hair was standing up on the back of my neck!

For me it would be the "Lord of the Flies". Not that it is gory or guts but as a teacher I see the power shifts among kids and how uncaring they can be to hurt, maim, or kill what could have been a former friend. Even the ones that have the ability and willingness to save them from life threatening situations are still targets in the name of superiority. It scares me that there are people like that around me all the time. Sounds like I'm paranoid, doesn't it.

The scariest movie I have ever seen was the movie RV with Robin Williams. Now that movie scared me stiff. I hope things like that NEVER happen to me!!!

I hate scary movies. Last one I saw was Friday the 13th at a drive-in. THe original Friday the 13th. NEVER AGAIN.

One of my former students (Alice Maguire) was prop mistress for Friday the 13th. I mentioned that at a Alumni Board meeting, and one of the elder members of the board decided to go see the movie since an alumni worked on it with no idea it was a horror movie. Her remarks at the next meeting were interesting!

"My First Marriage". Was a VHS movie made back in 1971. Although I haven't seen it in over 30 years, I still get sweaty palms and flashbacks. Bob

Scariest movie of all time? I think it was one they showed us in high school. You know, the one on the human reproductive system.

Oh, I don't know, those machines with the death rays creeped me out too. Every time I drive down I-65 in Indiana past the giant wind farm I'm reminded of it. Those windmills are sort of reminiscent of the movie somehow.

When I was a kid in North central Montana, one of the local theaters showed the original "The Thing". Some of the snowy scenes were filmed in Cut Bank, MT (about 100+ miles to the west). Boy, that alien was scary. Had trouble sleeping for several nights.

The Tingler 1959. They told us it was loose in the theater, and the only way to avoid it was to scream.
