I haven't asked him in too much detail but he said sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.
For example he said if he buys gas for $x.xx and then prices drop and the fuel in his tanks cost more then he loses. But if he buys gas for $x.xx then prices go up he makes more profit. But it's usually a wash because prices fluctuate so much and he has such a high turn over he gets refilled often. The stations that get hit the most are ones that sit on their tanks of gas for long periods of time.
He said selling gas is his advertisement for his food mart.
I can ask him more about it in detail when I see him next if anyone is interested.

Dad made his money off the full service, ie=tires, batteries, tune-ups, oil, brakes, etc. we even checked the oil, pumped the fuel, washed the windows

Big bucks there. Buddy is in the process of building another station which will have these capabilities. he is nto sure if he is going to do it himself or rent out the spot though.

Total reserve contains only 36 days worth of oil. All the oil in there now cost right at 20 billion when it was purchased. If we use it, it would cost 64 billion at today's prices to replace it.... And if we used it to lower prices it would encourage use of dirty of fossil fuels, decrease demand for electric cars, etc etc...
By definition, The reserve is to be used only in the event of a “severe energy supply interruption” or “domestic or international energy supply shortages of significant scope or duration.” We are not there yet...

The UCS breaks it down like this. Of the over $22,000 spent on gas over the lifetime of an average vehicle purchased in 2011 …
• oil companies earn about $15,000
• 14% goes to taxes used for roads and public transportation
• 10% goes to refining costs
• 8% goes to distribution and marketing
• Gas stations aren’t your enemy—they earn only about 3-5 cents on each gallon sold (it’s the snacks they profit from)
Ok, so what does this mean for those who own shares in oil companies? Not much, according to the UCS. The argument is that “even if you had $1 million invested [in a company like ExxonMobil], you would still get less than one cent in return after spending almost $2,000 on gasoline.”
So what’s the point of the UCS report? There’s always an agenda, which in this case is to campaign for fuel-efficient vehicles. After taking the hit on the upfront cost of a hybrid vehicle, you can save thousands in gas costs over the life of the vehicle.

What does "supply & demand" have to do with prices anymore??? nothing...period..In the state of the union address Mr. O said we are importing less than we did 20 years ago...cars over-all have doubled their mileage in the past 20 years...
Just comes down to "if they know you need it >>> you'll pay...no matter how fuel effective we can build stuff...the oil and refineries will see to it that they get their's....

If we use less, they'll claim they have to jack up prices to maintain enough profits to maintain the plants they use to make the product we can't do without.

They started mandatory water conservation here a few years back. Overall use went down about 30% the first year so the water company raised the rates because their income went down. Water use continues to go down and the rates continue to rise. We now pay a big minimum rate even if we don't use any water!

An "economist" on TV predicted >$5 @ G for regular gas this summer, didn't mention diesel fuel. WY has the lowest gas prices in the U.S.A. If anyone sees me pulling a tent out of the trunk of my car _____ don't This reminds me, perhaps I should cancel our appt. to look at that Winnebago Journey Saturday.
