Where are they now?
In 1492 when Columbus "discovered America" off the coast of the Bahamas, there were 100 MILLION people living in the Americas.

People in this hemisphere when Columbus started the discovery of the Americas had no genetic immunity to most European diseases. This caused an incredible die off. Many groups died off completely.

Orson Scott Card has written a great book about how history possibly could have turned out if Columbus had not done what he did. It's called Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus. You should check it out!

Where are they now? Well, since that was 1492, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they are probably dead.

Is there a point to this thread?

One would think this thread does NOT fit the "RV Only" litmus test !

Actually, the "Just Conversation" forum is for items "Non-RV Related", according to the description on the main page.

As I understand it, the "Just Conversation" thread does not need a point. But just for you, I will explain why I thought this "factoid" was compelling. When I read the history books in high school and college, hardly anything was mentioned about native populations. I had no idea that so many peoples were here before Europe "discovered" them. 100 million people. I find it incredible that there were so many here already and that either accidentally or on purpose, almost all were wiped out by the interaction. Makes me wonder what will happen when we get visited by outer space aliens. They will of course know about germs and what they would need to do to protect the planet's 7 billion, but would they even care.
Hope that helps explain "the point". Happy trails.
