Where does the money go?

Over the years, I have read about the fines our Gov't receives from companies. Example, the FAA fined a certain Airline $13,000,000 for lack of maintenance, the Dept. of Health fined a meat packing company $7,100,000 for neglect and causing tainted meat. This is just two of hundreds of fines levied that I can remember. Sooooo, with all these big fines paid, where does this money end up? Just curious. Do any of the families that were injured or got sick get any of this or do the taxpayers see any benefit from these monies?

I would think taxpayers benefit as the money goes in the general fund.

The government spends $6.85 million per minute. So those two fines kept the government open for about 3 minutes.

I worked for EPA and for the most part when EPA issues fines and I have seen them in the 10's of millions, most are never paid. "IF" the cited violations are fixed the fines are reduced to 10% of the original fine. The headlines are for the media to "create news"

So, if I understand this "fine business" those big numbers are mearly a PR smoke screen that is put up to deter others from violating the laws? That sounds ludicrous to me but not surprising. I guess if I was on a flight and was injured due to an airline for example not doing the necessary maintenance according to the law I would be very upset to learn that they did not pay the amount as set by the FAA. It seems to me many of these fines such as the example above should go to the injured or the taxpayers and not the government. I can see the same case scenerio being applied for FDA as the FAA and many other Gov't agencies. Any thoughts? Am I not seeing this thing right. Thanks for the replies.

I concur, send those fines to the people who were injured. They need the money for the medical bills alone. Nice to have a little extra too. Bet we stop a lot of corporation frauds this way.

I watched one process where a contractor had a long list of violations and fines. He looked at the first one, $75,000, and said he'd pay that one, he saved $1.2 million with that violation. He then said "Let's talk about the rest of these, and got a well-publicized $425,000 down to $78,000. He left happy.

I think in some cases a portion of the fines goes to the victims, but most of it goes to the government for supplying the attorneys. Have you ever seen where an attorney didn't make out well?

I think that if you want to be compensated for the negligence of others you must sue them in court. Fines usually go to the government.
