I was three and a half years old and living in Orlando. This was long before the mouse came to town, when the streets in the outskirts of town weren't paved and the scent of orange blossoms filled the air in the spring. My, how things have changed in fifty years.

I had just returned home to Salem, Oregon after completing Basic Training at Fort Ord, Ca.

I had joined the National Guard while a Junior in High School so had to go for Basic training as soon as I graduated in June of 1961. Five days after graduating I was at Fort Ord... what a way to spend my first summer out of school.

Planning for the senior prom, graduation and trying to scrounge up some scholarships to help pay college cost. Reminds me, I need to send in the money for our 50th reunion.

Just starting my 5th year in the Air National Guard (133rd MATS). Later that year my wife and I got married (50 years this Sept) just before I was activated into the Air Force for the Berlin Wall sabre rattling.

Also vividly remember where I was when it was announced that Kennedy was shot.

I was there in Washington DC. I was a member of the Washington North Carolina High School Band and we were chosen to represent NC in the inaugural parade. It snowed the day before and was very cold the day of the inauguration. We were told to look ahead as we passed the presidential reviewing stand, which I did but my eyes were looking at President Kennedy.
It is an experience that I will never forget.

I was 6 months from graduating High School and 7 months from joining the US Navy. I was at sea installing a sound system in the Chiefs quarters on a WWII class destroyer and had just gotten it finished and turned on, only to hear of Kennedy's assanation.
