I was in my 4th year of AF service at George AFB, Victorville California (now closed) Stayed in southern California for a short term after I got out. Found out quickly that working on multi-million dollar equipment in the service didn't get you much once you were out. Came home took advantage of the GI bill and went back to school. Wouldn't have done it without the GI bill.

I had just graduated high school in '76 and was working for a catalog showroom, Boardman Ltd. that I worked for during HS. in Dewitt, NY. I was way too smart to go to college, that came later. They made me assistant manager of another store but it started to look like the company wasn't doing so well. Dad got me a job with NY Telephone and 32 years later and a few different phone company names for the same place I retired. Boardman went bankrupt BTW and college went on while working. Way easier than letting mom and dad send me like they wanted to. You do get smarter as you grow a little older.

On Jan 1 of '77 I wrapped up a 9 year stint as a crew chief at Randolph AFB and headed to a new training experience and career field as a Safety Technician. Three months at Lowery AFB, CO and I headed to Fairchild AFB, WA. Exited Active Duty two years later, got my degree and joined the AF Reserves. Been a civilian Safety Manager for 30+ years and finished up 10 years in the Reserves as a screw chief on C-141s.

Graduated from Deer lakes Sr High School near Pittsburgh PA. I was working in a Mobil Gas station, where we actually still pumped the gas and checked the oil for customers. We also had a full service garage where I learned to be a mechanic.
