Per authenticity of "Scotch" whiskies:

Even Scotch from Scotland isn't always made by the traditional smoked-over-peat (or peat-derived coal) method, and that's what supposedly supplies the taste that most purists identify as characteristic.

I hope you were able to do some blind taste tests - and by that I don't mean that you were blind drunk! It's really easy to get in the "habit" of picking up a different brand - age - cask - etc until you have a collection. So many options - so little time.

So true...but thanks to the education I've received in this thread, learning about that whole "peat" thing and all, I know now that if it doesn't taste like dirt, it isn't real Scotch!

The Educational value of these threads simply can't be overstated!

Suntory makes a Japanese Whisky, but if you look at their bottles nowhere does it say "Scotch" - my son bought me a bottle of 12 year old Yamazaki Single Malt Whisky and that's exactly what the bottle label said. By the way - I didn't really care for it. My favorite is still 18 Year Old Scapa...

I am not a drinking man. I will occasionally have a guinness or a hot cocoa with a tablespoon of cognac in it ...YUM

I cook with it sometimes. A nice gentlemans/whiskey sauce for deserts ...Just made a ham glaze out of redbreast/tullamore dew , dark brown sugar, molasses, splash of soy sauce, a teaspoon of red pepper flakes, and apricot jam. Very good

Its a single malt from Islay in Scotland. smokey and salty. I like all the Islay malts.
