We had one born in WI a number of years back. It was quite a sensation for our Native American population as well as tourists from all over. The last time we stopped at the Crazy Horse monument in the Black Hills they had a photo of the WI calf. As she grew up, and older, she did eventually fade to the normal brown color though.

There's a monument to a white buffalo in Snyder, TX. Ironic since Snyder was a hub to the buffalo hunters who just about wiped out the native buffalo & bison herds.

Show's me how dumb I am. I didn't know a buffalo could be white without being a albino... I had a white doe walk pass me this year during muzzleload season and I thought that was something. I would love to see this buffalo...road trip maybe!

White buffalo are rare indeed. Frontier Village in Jamestown, ND. has 'White Cloud' who is still white...he's two now, IIRC. When we saw him, he was laying down next to Momma(I assume) with a plastic bag pierced and hanging from his left horn. The Native Americans used to hold the white buffalo in high regard...I guess that has changed with us 'not so native' Americans. But I guess, who's gonna go out in that field and remove the bag?? BTW, the campground there is a dirty gravel pit...stay somewhere else. The place has the largest standing buffalo in the world and has a collection of historic buildings on site that I found very interesting and you can visit for FREE! It's is worth a stop, just not to camp there. Bob

Most of the buffalo herds are not pure buffalo anymore. There is a supprising amount of 'cow' DNA (introduced by the Spaniards) and that is what makes a white buffalo possible. The Taos NM pueblo buffalo herd is one of the last 'pure' herds left in this country.
