Actually they used a Lincoln (bigger engine) disguised as a mercury to pull the trailer in the movie. You can see the distinctive Lincoln grill is a few of the shots.

They only used the Linc to pull the trailer in the mountain scenes. The rest of the time, it was a Merc.
