Cute, but no. USPS is an independent agency and supposed to be run more business-like. Problem is, congress still demands things from them that are unprofitable, for instance, USPS is legally obligated to serve all Americans, regardless of geography, at uniform price and quality. In some parts of the US, if something is shipped FedEx or UPS, it will be sent as close as they go, then dropped in a mailbox to finish the trip by USPS. The private package companies don't serve where it's not profitable. Also, congress mandated $5.5 billion per year to be paid into an account to pre-fund retiree health-care, 75 years into the future — unique to this agency and no private business could stay in business with such a requirement. Many post offices should be closed, they don't do enough daily business to keep the doors open, but again congress demands they stay open, even though stamps and package pick-up could be done by other businesses.

After monitoring my email accounts, I'm in favor of a minuscule 'stamp' fee charged for each email sent. Anything to stem the flow of spam and phishing emails. If they had to pay, say .001 (one tenth) of a cent for each email sent, it would give USPS revenue and reduce the choking of servers worldwide. I'd be able to send 1000 emails a year for a $1 at that rate. A typical spammer sends MILLIONS of unwanted junk to our inboxes every day!

Spam is never going to stop whether it's USPS or email. Making us pay for it is a bad idea. Heck, we can't even get a letter delivered within 5 days when you pay $14.95 to have it mailed overnight.

You're kidding, right? You think it would cut down on spam huh. you mean like having to pay postage has cut down on the amount of junk mail delivered by the USPS?
Bulk mailers look at it as a cost of doing business and judging by the amount of junk mail handled by the USPS it pays off for them. Not to mention the thousands of emails sent by corporations that would pass the cost on to consumers. I don't think so....

Not that USPS is perfect by any stretch of the imagination but I would think email has hurt them pretty badly.

No, I'm not kidding. Bulk mailers with the USPS look for a return rate of about 1% or so. Bulk mail is usually targeted to potential customers, and the postage (reduced) limits how many and where its mailed. Spam is blanketed to millions worldwide, most of us are not interested in Nigerian Princes, Viagra, Canadian drugs or penis enlargement.

When a bulk mailer includes a postage paid envelope, I rip up the contents, stuff the envelope and mail it back to the sender, giving the USPS additional revenue. I can't do that with spam.

I enjoy mixing it up, sending AmEx a Mastercard application, Visa a Discovery app, and so on. In my college days, we'd affix the postage paid postcards found on campus bulletin boards to bricks found on demolition sites and drop them in mailboxes. It cuts down on my trash stream and gives me a warm spot in my heart. My wife doesn't understand.

I used to do that but it was more hassle than it was worth; the junk mail kept on coming. I don't mind junk mail too much; it takes only a few seconds to drop it in the trash. Same for spam; it takes only a few seconds to delete it from my inbox. Telemarketers and political calls, on the other hand, I do mind. The b*****ds are selfishly using the phone service I put in for MY personal use and demand I interrupt my life to deal with them at the time they decide call me (being on the Fed DNC list doesn't deter the telemarketers). The inconsiderate, selfish donkey excavations force me to take draconian measures to avoid them, reducing the value of the service I am paying for. For three months prior to the last election, I had to turn off the ringers on my phones because of the political calls flooding my phone line (the 30 number call block feature on my phones would fill up in three days). There has been a lull since the elections but if the telemarketers start up again (btw, I do not give out my phone number to anyone), I'm yanking the phone line.

Rant over. You are now being returned to your regularly scheduled thread.

Do yourself a favor and "opt out" of receiving any further credit card offers by going to https://www.optoutprescreen.com

By doing this, you prevent the big credit agencies (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) from allowing credit card companies from sending you offers.

This not only limits junk mail but lowers your risk of identity theft.

I agree. Haven't had a 'pre-approved' credit card app in years.

It's one thing that does work.
